Vols Going with Nike

Creative control is the only thing that matters to me.

On a side note, my belief in DP has been shaken to the very core...

How so? I've been strongly hinting at the possibility of a change since we started talking to other companies this summer. Thought we would have to take less money to do it. I still believe that is the case, but Nike made it a lot closer this time around than in previous negotiations. Close enough that we jumped.

Every Nike school gives up certain elements of control and agrees to participate in certain uniform programs and unveilings. They discontinued the "Pro Combat" program a couple of years ago, but sometimes 3-4 schools will debut a new stock uniform cut with a special uniform. We'll do that if asked.

Nike just unveiled a bunch of college basketball throwbacks that will be worn my schools in February. We would be obligated to do something like that as well.

As far as the standard, usual football uniform, we will maintain design control of that. Don't expect changes there.

But for alternates, there won't be a long-term back and forth on the design like we had with Adidas. They'll hand us an alternate and tell us when we're wearing it.
Men's and women's basketball will get reasonably cool custom uniforms every year, we'll work with designers on those.

As for other sports, our teams will wear whatever standard template Nike rolls out each year, like most of their schools.

This is what I'm worried about

Very disappointed in this. We were partners with Adidas, but Nike will treat us like all their other "second tier" schools. We'll never have any say in our jersey selection anymore. And their alternate uniforms generally look like crap. But I know, "it's what the kids like." Swell.

What is the basis for the belief that we would be considered a "second tier" school by Nike? Even during our down years our merchandise sold ranking was usually top 15 in the nation.

I keep hearing this "second tier" talk and I don't know what is based upon.

Can you fill us in on the other details of the contract? You seem to be in the know.

No one on this website is "in the know," but the closest person we have who is has said in the past that Nike doesn't view Tennessee as a top tier school like Michigan, Alabama, Texas, and the like, and schools that aren't big time in Nike's eyes get less say than the big boys. Now, I might be misinterpreting that a bit, but I'm pretty sure I read it right. Maybe that's not the case. Maybe I misunderstood. But this is the Internet, and "maybe" is what drives the Internet. Well, maybe, and pictures of people, but for now we'll stick to speculatin'.

Awesome, they say jump, we say how high. If they have us looking like those ass clowns in Oregon, I'll riot. RIP to the UT 3 Stripes. Weak sauce.

So that means that we're going to have alternates just in time for Bristol!

Expect all of the players to wear stock car uniforms.

This is what it would look like while running through the T

Look at all the sponsors too! We'll be bringing in so much money. We'll be out of that $200M hole in no time!

Bet all the UT faithful will change their mind. And the winnings in our future

Thanks. Those throwback basketball unis are awesome IMO can't wait to see them

Michigan is an Adidas school.

Top tier in the sense they're a valuable program, regardless of whether or not Nike has them under contract. I might be misremembering but I'm pretty sure Michigan was an example. And if it wasn't Michigan, the thought remains thatit sounded like UT was not a top school in their eyes. I *hope* that's not the case, but that's not what's been said here in the past.

It was a statement in Nikes own words in previous contract negotiations. Their offer this time was better. Not Alabama or North Carolina-level, but better.

DP12, is this a problem that will be fixed by winning and more exposure with multiple seasons of top-tier bowl games or maybe a few years in the playoffs? Or is it going to be hard to change their view of us?

Guess if its more $ than its understandable. I like our Adidas deal here. I like their products too. We had Nike for a long time prior to switching. Either of those two companies are fine by me.

I just would never want us in UA.
