Vols Going with Nike

We can all agree that both have made awful jerseys in the past, and both have made some nice looking ones in the past. I don't really have a preference either way. If this gets kids excited to come play football, I'm all for it. I just hope our Smokey Greys don't end up looking like KY's new greys.

side note: I've seen a lot of people wanting some different helmet combos, and i don't think this would've ever happened under adidas.:twocents:

Nike > Adidas all day.

I'm not even trying to read the guys whining in here. Get over it already.

This is a good move for the program, and great to read as a fan.

While I'm clearly no fan of Nike, I'm extremely happy that we didn't go with UnderArmor. Much happier with Nike than that UA crap. So at least there's that.

Very disappointed in this. We were partners with Adidas, but Nike will treat us like all their other "second tier" schools. We'll never have any say in our jersey selection anymore. And their alternate uniforms generally look like crap. But I know, "it's what the kids like." Swell.

Because they respect tradition?

I'm not sure which is more pathetic: that a recruit might choose a school based on what apparel company it uses, or that a school might change it's vender based on what recruits want.

Your and my values are what they are due to our era and background. Today's kids are different whether we like it or not. I'm for staying with "Addie" but this is a different time and generation. Likely in the year 2525, the UT will switch to something else, back to Adidas, to UnderArmorl, or some brand as yet unknown. Doyle was right, it's about the school not some brand name. If it sways five stars or some other coveted recruit our way, it's worth it.

It will be huge if our kickers can use nike balls.. Check out the test wilhoit did online if u haven't. Nike is a huge advantage in kicking.

UT tested Nike balls in practice during the Dooley era and found no real difference in our kickers between the Wilson balls we currently use and the Nike and Adidas balls we tested.

The UT contract with Adidas did not cover footballs. We weren't required to use theirs, we weren't forbidden from using Nike.

The new contract will not force UT to use Nike balls, either. After consulting with other Nike schools, it won't cover footballs, basketballs, baseball/softball bats or golf clubs and balls. We will be able to get all of those products at a substantial discount, but won't be obligated to use Nike's products in those areas.

I'm a 20 year old student and have played football my whole life. Nike is above and beyond more popular to the people I associate with that are my age. I have worn both nike and adidas football cleats and basketball shoes and it's not even close. Plus adidas baseball stuff is horrible. Recruits are already talking about how much they love the switch.

Adidas sucks. Is the Derek Dooley of the athletic gear industry.

Tennessee Football is more popular to me than either

I'd put money on our kickers using nike balls from '15 on.

Can you fill us in on the other details of the contract? You seem to be in the know.

Do you know any stipulations of the contract?

Will we have full control over the uniform design?

Every Nike school gives up certain elements of control and agrees to participate in certain uniform programs and unveilings. They discontinued the "Pro Combat" program a couple of years ago, but sometimes 3-4 schools will debut a new stock uniform cut with a special uniform. We'll do that if asked.

Nike just unveiled a bunch of college basketball throwbacks that will be worn my schools in February. We would be obligated to do something like that as well.

As far as the standard, usual football uniform, we will maintain design control of that. Don't expect changes there.

But for alternates, there won't be a long-term back and forth on the design like we had with Adidas. They'll hand us an alternate and tell us when we're wearing it.

Men's and women's basketball will get reasonably cool custom uniforms every year, we'll work with designers on those.

As for other sports, our teams will wear whatever standard template Nike rolls out each year, like most of their schools.
