Recruiting Forum: Football Talk VIII

I seriously don't understand how we can sign 31 next year when we are signing 30 this year. To get over 25 is all about back counting but it would seem we are maxing this out this year. Very odd to me but I don't understand the fuzzy math that is recruiting. It seems you could have a statistician working full time on how to coordinate all of this stuff and still not get it right.

JC Shurburtt on UT's JUCO recruiting:

“It’s one of the best groups of JUCO prospects in the country,” Shurburtt said, “and if at least half of these guys live up to their billing, it aligns the Vols’ roster with other contenders in the SEC.”

If you factor in the incoming talent and just continue to project the same growth we have currently seen in this Butch team then wow with the right QB play the sky is the limit. That's not a knock on Worley he may be that guy when he does run he has some good runs but we can look around the SEC and easily see what a great QB can do for a good team.

Just excited to see team117 close this season out strong and then Butch to put a big fat cherry and some sprinkles on this cupcake with a top 5 recruiting finish. If he lands top 3 then consider that sprinkles too.

That's a valid point and one used in their defense at the time. It certainly points to everything this team and the fan base has been through in the last several years.

I'll take a blind optimist over a blind pessimist, but I get your point.

Agree with last point...I am typically a "glass half full" guy.

So does anyone have any reason, besides blind optimism and hope, that we can beat Bama?

I'm looking at some stats, and it's not pretty.

McCarron 69.2% comp, 14 TD, 3 INT
Team Rushing: 6.0 YPC
Receiving: Top 6 receivers averaging over 10 yards per catch.
Scoring: 40.7 ppg
Defense: 9.7 ppg

Besides Texas A&M (42), no one has scored more than 10. A pretty good Ole Miss was shut out.

So let's hear it boys! and please don't just post this:

Let's hear something tangible. :p

Turnovers and starting field position are the places for us to hang our hat. Palardy and the defense are the backbone. Team117 is fairly opportunistic and patient. That's the area a lot of teams start to fall apart around when they don't have initial success. You can see team117 hanging in their regardless of a recent punt or 3 and out. I'm excited regardless of the outcome.

Holding both Murray and Shaw to 200 passing yards is legit. Spurrier was obviously agitated they couldn't get anything going in the passing game. If we can stop the run against Bama on first and second down, we should be able to bring a serious pass rush on 3rd down.

Our pass rush on 3rd down is legit. Love what I'm seeing out of guys like Hood and Obrien on 1st and 2nd down too. Stripling is definitely getting the best out of this unit.

Had we ran a 4-3 last year Dools would still be on the sideline....think about that for a minute!

Which is why I am glad that we ran the 3-4 :), even if games were hard to watch last year. Our offense last year, with this years defense, and we are playing at the Georgia Dome in December.

And it keeps the crazies in the Tennessee fan base at bay (for a time), which is equally important. I'm tired of the negativity and "fire the coach (or assistant coaches)" mentality. Ready to watch a winning team and not have to listen to that for a few years.

The "fans" who want to fire the assistants are crazy. What this team and players need is stability. Honestly, I can't remember the last time we've had an entire coaching staff remain in place for more than a season. We'll only be better next year going into the season with the same coordinators/position coaches. Less thinking, more playing will be key.

Don't discount Big Dan especially after last week, he made his presence felt - literally in the case of Shaw. Someone tweeted that like 4 of our top tacklers against SC were linemen. That is huge especially when we go against Bama. The fact that McCarron is not that mobile has me optimistic we can apply even more pressure. You could see against Shaw we delayed before really bringing the heat.

On The Mark: SEC the biggest threat to its own BCS title hopes - ESPN

The Non-SEC fans who reply make me want to defend the SEC teams I do not like.

I know. I'm the say way. I don't even care about the rest of the SEC, yet all those clowns that get on there constantly degrading it in every single thread (even the damn Oregon-Nebraska new series thread cause apparently we're wimps for moving the UN series) make me some darned mad, I end up rooting for other SEC fans to come in there in mix it up with them.

Says FSUs talent not their QBs but I'll go ahead and spare everyone else's sanity in putting an end to this discussion with a kid who doesn't even have the ability to read his own post let alone the posts of others. Good luck with you and I hope hooked on phonics works for you.

If you want to take a break from hooked on phonics, please find where I said anything negative about Jameis.

You're awful butthurt about the whole ordeal. So now you singing his praises? You advised me to not get too hyped about him so how about you not hug Alabamas nuts so much then. You hyped for them after they allowed over 40 to A&M? You just hate fla state and Jameis. It's ok if you do I guess but it is kind of weird to see a supposed vol fan defending ala. By all rights it should be a good game. Fsu's defense is legit and ala hasn't faced a team as talented as fsu's yet. You'll get over it son. You knocked him I said you were stupid to be so dismissive of him, then you try to bring in some ancillary point which has nothing to do with his talent . You brought up transitive earlier, you should master deductive first
