The Runner's thread

Most I've ran in one run is about 10 miles. Need to step up training in order to that 13.1 length.

Nice job Yank.

Once you get up to ten, the adrenaline and excitement of being out there will carry you through the final 3.1.

When I ran my full my longest run was around 18 or 19.

What were you eating as you ran?

Hey guys, I just noticed this thread and decided to hop in.

I've been running since February of this year, hell, 40 years old and I figure its a good way to stay in shape. Now that I'm addicted to it, which I'm sure everyone else is from reading 100 of the pages of this thread, I'm wanting to run my first half marathon. I have my sights set on the Foothills Half in November.

I've been going about 5-6 miles a day, 4 -5 times a week. Pace hovers around 8:50, good days I can get down to 8:40.

I've been running on Vomeros which I like a lot.

Any resources for training are greatly appreciated.

All I would say is be consistent. The best way to train for a half marathon is just get your body used to running (which it sounds like you've already been doing).

I never did more than a 5k for a race but I did 8-10 miles every day to train for them (1 miles warmup, stretchs, 5-6 miles workout, stretches, then miles or so cooldown). 10 miles is the most I did by myself though on one run.

Good luck.

That is a terrible way to train for any type of race.

That's how I trained in high school.

Obviously some workouts were less than others, and the day or two before we had much easier workouts.

And yes, I'd agree it wasn't the best way. My knees kill me because I overused them for 4 years, and a lot of the other runners got burnt out from being pushed to much.

Now I take it a lot easier and just run how I feel. Some days I'll run 5 miles and some days 1.

Best piece of advice. Don't listen to LittleCat

Wasn't suggesting he should do 8-10 miles a day like me. That will just get you tired and burnt out. Was just saying what I did. I feel it worked somewhat (yeah, I did get more injuries) because we were good, but in the long run it hurt us.

If you had all those issues and know it wasn't good, why would you offer it as a suggestion on how to train?

Probably need to replace one of your days with a gradually increasing longer run and another day with some speed work. Truthfully you are running enough now that you could complete a half. Your training would be to ensure you enjoy it and post a decent time.

Google Hal Higdon half marathon training program or Runner's World half marathon training program. Either one of those will give you a good start.

If you are going to start training for a half I would suggest that you keep your running days to four and make sure you never run more than two days in a row. This will allow your legs and body to recover. It will make running longer distances easier, less painful and more enjoyable. JMO. Good luck and there is nothing like race day!!

I'm just messing with you dood

3.12 yesterday. 30.07. First 5k under 30 since I started. (29:50)

9.02
9.19
10.26

Good pace for me. Need to rest and recover more, but I have the urge to run everyday when my ankle isn't killing.
