I was a college student in '88

Have any late eighties Hess Hall stories from when it still deserved to be called the Zoo?
nope but I got Greve Hall stories.

Can you believe we lived in dorms without air conditioning? Everybody had a fan.

then there was the phones on the walls where one line was shared with 2 rooms. 4 people total.

Psshhh. At TTU the dorms had 1 phone on each floor that the whole floor shared. You better learn quick to yell "shower" before you flushed the toilet in the community bathroom or get bottle rockets shot under your door for pay back.

yep. We used to go to band camp at TTU so I was familar with your dorms. And that's one of the reasons I went to UT (as if there were anywhere else to go for me).

Greve had community showers but they werent as bad as TTU. The dorm was a former girls dorm back in the 60s (I think) so showers were partitioned. Toliets were on the other side of the bathroom so flushing wasnt an issue.

Had no AC in Hess when I was there in 91-93 worse they turned on radiators too early in year, you get that upper 80s days with radiators raising room to upper 90s. Everyone kept doors open and windows open, made it social, people watched each others stuff, but was a party all the time. Now they got AC those radiators are gone and its so quiet you could study. Tragedy....

Even worse, I lived at the end of Greve and it was at the time they were doing the massive renevation of the library back in the mid 80s. So I had to leave my window open because it would be hot during the spring as well as all the radiator heat coming up from lower floors in the winter but then all I could hear was the construction. And believe me they didnt care about students sleeping habits.

One good thing about no AC is that with all the windows open and fans, it was difficult for the RAs to determine who was smoking dope. Helped too that we could actually smoke in our rooms at that time too.

Hadn't even considered that....we all smoked in our rooms in 90's too.....guess that is verboten now?

In our case our RA was known to "smoke" too..... :p Was worried until I saw his room and it was straight up deadhead wall to wall.
