Its a complete failure of our coaching staff if in 3rd and 6 or 7 and longer if Brewer/Sapp are not in the nickel package. AJ should not see the field in these scenarios.

He is a solid run defender inside the box, thats really it.

What a fun day of college football.

Here is how I would like to see it work out.

Franklin is hired after they fire kiffin at usc :)

Texas hires saban :)

Scrambling and desparate vandy hires kiffin/orgeron :)

Saban decides to stay one more year at bama to pound kiffin/vandy and the SEC grants bama's and Tennessee's requests to play a one year home AND away football series with vandy :)

Saban screws texas out of getting a quality coach while thinking they have him :)

franklin starts at usc only to be indicted in Tennesse for his part inthat horrid case :)

Thus usc also gets screwed... :)

muschamp starts a losing streak yet retains his job :)

:) :) :) :)

Just what kind of pills did you prescribe for yourself this morning, Doc? :eek:hmy:

I like the way you think, though.

It's cool. He could have been talking about anything, not just AJ, which is why I asked. No worries

Dooley did not fit my comment of course. Was talking more about above average (by SEC standards) players who we take for granted as fans.

Have to agree with this logic. Please tell me we are not going to use AJ as the spy on Mariota. Our front 4 needs to be very disruptive this week. McCullers disappointed me yesterday...he should have owned the LOS against that OL. If they can be, then I would like to see us live and die in the nickel, so that we can have as much speed on the field as possible. We have to have someone with some speed spy Mariota all game...Brewer? I expect to see zone coverage and a spy early on, and hope that our front 4 will disrupt the rhythm of Oregon's offense. IMO, whether we are close with the chance to upset Oregon on the road will all come down to our DL play.

Uh no, he's sound fundamentally. What he's done at Vandy isn't luck. It's fine if you wanna be a homer, it is. But there has been an EXTREME improvement in the level of play at Vandy due to him. As well as recruiting. Keep in mind....this is Vandy. I'm not sure how you can say he wouldn't shine at a bigger school.

I think some of you have trouble differentiating between a grade A douche bag and a bad football coach. Nick Saban is a major douche bag. He's also the best coach since Tom Osborne. James Franklin could be a spokeswomen for Summers Eve, but he's a damn good football coach. Major, major jerk, but good coach.

Agree with this. Would not want him as my coach because he is such a jerk and I can't stand jerks. But, if he did have any cover up with this situation, he is worse than a jerk. He is a horrible human being and should not be coaching anywhere regardless of how good he is at his job.

Particularly at QB. Casey Clausen, Erik Ainge, and Tyler Bray (lack of leadership but that may be due to lack of leadership for him) are bad QBs. We would take any if those guys leading the offense now.

AJ is not that good. Granted they all have areas to improve. Projected first rounder for a reason.

I agree with this. There's a tendency to take the greatest player to ever play a given position for Tennessee, and trash any subsequent player who doesn't compare.

I was always a Bray fan. He was a knuckle head and melted sometimes under pressure, but he didn't get much help from his coaching staff or defense. If we had even a top 50 type defense last year, he would be remembered much more fondly.

As for AJ, I hear all the criticism and understand the points made here. But given the status of our roster, I'm not sure we have better options. Plus, you are right, he's been well regarded by every coaching staff we've had as well as a lot of other analysts and SEC coaching staffs. Must be a reason for it. I appreciate him, personally.

Football Stats:
Tennessee is tied for the NCAA lead in fewest penalties per game with 1.0 (Arizona State). Tennessee also is tied in INTs with 7 (Northwestern)
Tennessee's Brian Randolph is tied for 3rd in INTs with 2. As a team Tennessee is 17th in the NCAA in rushing with 555 yards. -Kolton

We've played Austin Peay and WKU. Why anyone is paying attention to stats like these after these two games is mind-boggling.

•Let's pause a bit on the Bobby Petrino's headed back to the big-time train. It wouldn't shock me if Petrino did a one-and-out at WKU, but his Hilltoppers really stubbed their toes against a rebuilding Tennessee program. At one point, Petrino's team committed five turnovers over a six-play stretch. Of course, WKU lost after that. It doesn't mean Petrino won't roll off nine or 10 wins this season, but that eye-catching 2-0 start over SEC schools went down the drain in spectacular fashion.

Big Picture: Canes pull off biggest win in years, but the U not back yet - CBSSports.com

I'm enjoying reading articles written by folks who are having to eat a little crow for thinking WKU would beat Tennessee. Glad we took them down in such embarrassing fashion.

If Franklin gets out if this case unscathed he would be a prime candidate. I don't like him but I respect what he and the D-coordinator have done. He just needs to take some professionalism classes. :)

I think Texas could afford to drop 6 mil on a coach, so they don't have to settle for a possible up and comer like Franklin. He's a great coach, but he's not "highest paid coach in football great," and that's what Texas can afford. They'd get an NFL coach or Muschamp or someone who's already considered elite. They dont have to gamble.

I don't know if he'll take the job but I'd bet anything Texas will make a serious run at Saban if they decide to let Brown go. They're one of the few schools in CFB I could see getting Saban to leave Bama. It's not like he has anything left to prove in the SEC. If he takes another job it'll either be Texas, USC or off to the NFL again.

And no way in hell Texas or USC offer James Franklin the job, they can do a lot better than that. Laughable. He's not even beat a single ranked team yet, folks. Let's pump the brakes a little on Jimmy being The Bear. JMO

I think McCullers is going to show up much more vs SEC teams like UF, UGA, Bama, etc. just like AJJ. They're not built to play vs spread teams. Much better at stopping power run teams. JMO

I haven't counted, but I've seen very few runs up the middle this year. When he has wind in him, he seems to be playing really well. Glad we have 3 solid DT so he can get breaks.

smh.

Not taking the blame

Statistics don’t lie.

Tennessee quarterback Justin Worley was 3-of-9 for 35 yards at halftime. He finished the game going 11-of-19 for 142 yards, tallying a touchdown and an interception. The Worley-helmed Vols were 0-for-5 on third down conversations in the first half.

But go ahead and throw the stats out the window.

You didn’t need a box score to know the senior quarterback struggled against the Hilltoppers.

Worley would beg to differ.

He believes the blame for the below-average passing stats is shared.

“I wouldn't say I was struggling. We had a couple drops and that hurt,” Worley said. “I couldn't get in a rhythm just based on the number of plays that we had. We had nine or so plays in the first quarter. Not getting in a rhythm never helps, but I don't think I struggled."

Vols open as a 20pt underdog.

Lower than I expected.

Also louisville only a 7.5pt favorite at kentucky. Might have to come out of retirement for that one!

If I bet I would jump on Oregon to cover. I expect that to rise through the week.

I need to get my hands on some money for that! The line is ridiculous, Louisville will win by 20+

Texas would not hire Franklin. Why, because he is black. You can disagree with me if you want but Texas is more bass ackward then anywhere else in the country. I don't agree with but that is a fact.

Sigh...every time anyone prefaces a sentence with "not to sound racist" the sentence immediately following is almost always racist.
