I was listening to 92.5 the Game in Atlanta this morning on the drive into work. They were discussing the great game Peyton had last night. They had a caller on that said Peyton flipped he and his 11 yr old kid off when asked to sign a autograph at the 09 Pro Bowl. I have only met Peyton once, it was behind the Copper Cellar before the 05 TN-SC game where they retired his jersey. I made it a point not to walk up to him or bother him as he looked like he was enjoying time with friends tailgating behind the Copper Cellar. Peyton noticed my 8 year old son staring at him in awe, put his drink that he had in a solo cup on the table and walked up to my son and said hello. He asked my son if he was ready for the game and made just a few words of small talk. I told Peyton thanks for going out of your way, it made our day. He had a few big guys standing beside him, he turned to one of them and asked them something. The big guy grabbed something out of the black suburban, it was a black sharpie. He signed my sons jersey. I know this was a long story but cant ever imagine Peyton flipping a kid off. Just after the caller hung up there must have been 5 calls back to back calling the last caller out with experiences nothing like the caller had mentioned. I tried calling in but didnt know their number and pulling up to work as well.
Peyton is all about being a roll model and setting an example to America's young people unlike the troll phone caller that called the radio station telling his lies. There's a special corner in hell for those type people.
And here I always thought those corners were reserved for murderers, rapists and such. Now I know talking bad about an athlete gets one too. Huh, learn something new every day I guess.
On the injury front, Curt Maggitt is expected to play some snaps on Saturday, but the Vols are not expecting Jacques Smith to play and Corey Vereen also will not play --- though there is a school of thought that Vereen might possibly be ready to go in time to log a few snaps next week at Oregon. Vereen was spotted walking around the Neyland-Thompson Sports Complex late Wednesday evening without a noticeable limp, crutches or even a wrap on his knee. Jones has been very candid in saying that Vereen has been and continues to be well ahead of schedule. As for Smith, the hope was that Smith would be back by this week, but he had a bit of a setback in his recovery and isn't ready to play. He had his screws taken out on Wednesday but he is not expected to be cleared to play. Maggitt has worked in practice very single day this week, from Monday through Thursday. Many times Maggitt worked with the second-team defense, but make no mistake: he's a difference-maker on the field for the Vols' defense.
The Vols' head coach hasn't been bashful about stressing the team's academic and community service efforts, in addition to the players' on-field performances. And Jones' APR record through the years is stout; it's why there was no hesitation to have a bonus clause tied to UT's APR performance moving forward. But how committed is the coach to that standard? Players have been told if they fail classes, not to expect to participate in the Vols' annual Pro Days. Those, Jones have said, are yet another opportunity for Tennessee to establish a program standard --- and failing classes isn't going to be a part of that standard as far as Jones is concerned.
