Tennessee head coach Butch Jones has been pushing his football team since he was hired back in December. Jones may not have pushed his team any harder than he pushed them this week. Jones has been relentless. On Wednesday, he basically started practice over in the middle of it. Jones' biggest point of emphasis has been effort. He labeled last Saturday's effort a B- overall that was a B+ a few times. Jones said there were moments were his defense rallied to the ball with 11 guys, but not on every play which is why he's spent the week talking about 63. Six seconds of effort with three maximum strains in that 6 seconds. It's been a huge point of emphasis, especially for the defense and especially for Daniel McCullers, who Jones said in the pre-season was the key to how his defense played this year. Of course as we wrote on Wednesday, Jones made McCullers wear a 63 jersey and there were 63 signs hung up all over the complex and McCullers' locker was stuffed with them.
A few other quick recruiting notes: Look for Tennessee to spend more time in Virginia moving forward. The state has been kind to the Vols in the past but there is currently no one on scholarship from the state of Virginia.
Look for Zach Azzanni and Tommy Thigpen to be the state's main two recruiters for the Vols.
It seems an opportune time to make a push to get back into the state with Virginia Tech's program looking not as solid as several years ago and questions about Mike London's long-term future at Virginia if he has another bad season.
Tennessee has already offered over half a dozen players in the state for 2015 and that includes Jaason Lewis, who is very high on the Vols currently, as well as offensive lineman Austin Clark, who's father grew up a big Tennessee fan and has brought Clark to several games.
Tennessee will also try and be bigger players in the Carolinas as they may not spend as much time in the state of Florida as it continues to be one of the hardest places to recruit to get the best prospects, while Virginia and North Carolina have routinely seen the best products leave the state.
I was listening to 92.5 the Game in Atlanta this morning on the drive into work. They were discussing the great game Peyton had last night. They had a caller on that said Peyton flipped he and his 11 yr old kid off when asked to sign a autograph at the 09 Pro Bowl. I have only met Peyton once, it was behind the Copper Cellar before the 05 TN-SC game where they retired his jersey. I made it a point not to walk up to him or bother him as he looked like he was enjoying time with friends tailgating behind the Copper Cellar. Peyton noticed my 8 year old son staring at him in awe, put his drink that he had in a solo cup on the table and walked up to my son and said hello. He asked my son if he was ready for the game and made just a few words of small talk. I told Peyton thanks for going out of your way, it made our day. He had a few big guys standing beside him, he turned to one of them and asked them something. The big guy grabbed something out of the black suburban, it was a black sharpie. He signed my sons jersey. I know this was a long story but cant ever imagine Peyton flipping a kid off. Just after the caller hung up there must have been 5 calls back to back calling the last caller out with experiences nothing like the caller had mentioned. I tried calling in but didnt know their number and pulling up to work as well.
