Volly, I tried that incremental 10 rep workout you mentioned a couple of months ago. I hung with it for 7 weeks, just doing in on 5 reps instead of 10. I noticed increase in strength, but that's about it.
I got challenged to run a 5k, by some guys in the Zone. I started training June 3, race was July 3. I have now run in 3 races, trimmed my time down by almost 10 minutes, and have lost over 10 lbs.
I even ran while we were on vacation in Destin.
Running is addictive. To me, it's a mind clearer. I can't wait to get back to running regular. Leaning towards staying on the elliptical till after the Disney trip. No need causing my feet to flare up adn have to walk the parks all day for 6 days.

When you say "training".....explain.
I started a month before the race. I decided I was going to run every other day. The first 3 running days, I only ran a 1/2 mile, the next 3 I bumped it up to a mile. Then I just stayed on that schedule 1/2 mile increase after 3 runs.
The first run at every increase sucked, the second run felt better, and the third I always felt the next increase was going to be easy.
My first run at 3 miles was over 36 minutes.
My last race was 8/17 and my time was 26:57.4.
I wouldn't start off on a track, volly. It's not as entertaining as running through a park or neighborhood. It's boring lap after lap. You'll give up on running quick. At least on a treadmill, you can watch tv and track your progress.
Download the mapmyrun app(or something similar) to your phone. It will track your distance and time for you.
My treadmill tells me distance and time. I usually listen to music, which tends to change my pace. And a good fightin' song require use of the incline feature (Rocky style).
The thing I like about my treadmill is that the weather doesn't matter, I don't have to leave the house, and I don't risk running so far from the house I can't get back.
It lets me set mph and goes in increments of .2 of a mile. When I tried running before I walked a couple laps to warm up, then ran a lap, walked a lap, ran a lap, walked a lap. 1/4 is the farthest I've ever "ran" or "jogged".
I would love to have a treadmill.
If you get interested in running a race, definitely run outside a couple of times to get used to it.
Also remember you run faster in a race. The excitement and knowing that you are beating someone kicks in.
I went to the track at the high school for a while. It was very hard for me to maintain a pace when I was running. I kept going faster, and couldn't really figure out how to stay consistent. Of course I got really winded, lol.
Tri-vol told me something about pace.. he said as you are running you should be able to hold a conversation with some one. So if you have someone you could run with then the pace you should be running should be one that you could hold a conversation with that person. If that makes sense. It made sense to me when he explained it.
