"Butch didn't speak to the media today. He will tomorrow evening. But it was made pretty clear by multiple sources today that Riyahd is going to miss significant time if not all season."

-VQ

Losing Riyahd for an extended period of time is gonna hurt. Hate to hear that...young guys will be relied on THAT much more now. Cautiously optimistic about our DBs though. Got some talent...young guys just gotta show up and ball.

Worley's interviews don't give me much confidence he's the man for the job. He doesn't seem like the brightest crayon in the box. Maybe it's just nervs talking to the press..

You must have thought Bray was charcoal then.

Lockdown, you are the only person i have ever seen, who has ever liked anything about Tony Carter's game in college or the pros. Lol

I'm a bit partial at times due to him being my partner D.Mclure's roommate in college. :) But TC will eat a comeback route up. :)

Dan McCullers played like a man on a mission tonight. When he has his mind set to do things, he is unstoppable. He needs to play like this on every snap this season for the Vols to be successful on defense. He has the ability to put the offensive linemen on skates and be very disruptive in the backfield. It seemed tonight something clicked in his mind because he was a force to be reckoned with. He could not be blocked. No offensive lineman had an answer for him. It was great to see.

On Worley...

I think he is managing the game pretty well. I think he needs to make more plays, but I think he's done a solid job. Worley needs some help from the receivers. They have to catch the ball better and help the quarterbacks more.

He's physically better than he's been. He's throwing it better than he has in terms of arm strength, velocity. The problem is he's throwing to either young receivers who are learning or to receivers who struggle to create separation with the defensive back.

To me the bigger question is who are the playmakers on this offense not who's going to get the playmakers the ball.

"During team work in 11-on-11 settings Riley Ferguson got a few first team reps and had one very nice play in particularly where he rolled out and drilled a laser in to a tightly covered Devrin Young for a first down.

Once again the freshman wideouts were prominently featured on the first team offense. Marquez North and Josh Smith both started with the ones at wideout, along with Pig Howard.

Working with the second team in the same drill Danny O'Brien showed up on a couple of different occasions, making tough plays in the interior and building a bit on what's been a nice last few days for the redshirt freshman.

In the defensive backfield Devaun Swafford continues to make a name for himself. He had an interception during one-on-one's."

O'Brien was the best part of this! He is scary important for the future.

I think this is spot on, and one of the reasons we will have some struggles. I think Worley is solid enough to do a fine job, but he probably lacks the top end talent to make the near impossible throws that need to be made when receivers cannot get that extra step of separation.

So, it comes down to risk. Does he try to force it in there, or does he take a sack/throw it away?

I think what we have seen from him the last two years does not demonstrate his ability. There is a world of difference from running with the 2's for two years, and then getting most of the snaps. If the receivers can help him out, he will be fine.

As long as Worley can orchestrate the running game and make the correct audibles, we'll win 6 games.

I'm guessing after CBJ threatened to sit down with MzTerry and show her the film of Croom's botched play a lot of people got nervous and started playing harder.

Pulling the I'm gonna tell your momma card works like a charm. Butch "Gets it."

If Worley manages this offense effectively and stays healthy all season we're going to win more than 6 games.

I want to believe, Ron, but we have major issues at WR, TE, DE, LB, and CB. 6-6 would mean we beat Austin Peay, Western Kentucky, South Alabama, @ Kentucky, and 2 out of Auburn, Vanderbilt, and @ Missouri. He's going to have to do more than manage the offense effectively for us to win 7 or more games...he's going to have to make plays and have WR/TE that are able to make plays consistently.

We're better off this year at CB and LB than the last few years. I'll take young fast talented guys like Sutton, Foreman and Williams over slow veterans any day. TE will be fine, WR's are plenty talented, just young. I'll give you DE concerns, we need Vereen and Smith back healthy and someone needs to emerge as an effective pass rusher.

And guess what? Even the best teams on our schedule will have injures and depth concerns in certain areas. That's part of the game.

Eleven-on-Eleven: During the team period the starters on offense included Justin Worley and Rajion Neal in the backfield as Pig Howard, Marquez North and Jacob Carter got the start on the outside. The offense was moving the ball efficiently but stalled as Marquez North allowed a diving deep post to bounce off of his hands in the end-zone . While the catch was not an easy one to make, it was one that everyone felt that Marquez should have come down with. Coach Jones was visibly upset at the dropped touchdown pass and let his receiver hear about it. “Make a play, Freshman! Make a play! You’ll only get two or three opportunities like that in a game. Make a play!”

Ferguson Growing: Freshman quarterback Riley Ferguson got some early run with the second team offense tonight after Peterman took a few early snaps. Ferguson had two very nice plays in a row, both on roll-outs, as he hit Devrin Young on what seemed to be the same play called back-to-back. Ferguson faked the inside draw and rolled hard to his right as he waited for Young to streak open across the right hash-mark. Both plays went for a first down and really seemed to energize the offense as they headed into their run-game work. Ferguson showed shades of fellow #10 Erik Ainge as he directed the no-huddle, fast-paced offense down the field in, arguably, the offense’s best work of the night.

We have young WR's who can step up for Worley but the will be if they will. This has to happen regardless of who is behind center.

Also, the CB's and LB's and DL has to step up. The DL has to get a rush to help out the DB's regardless of how good they are. No one can cover forever.

All in all, if no major injuries hit and the DL can get a pass rush to help out the DB's and the wide outs grow into their potential. I feel those three things....no major injuries, pass rush, and WR development could get us to 7 to 8 wins. If that doesn't happen, it could mean six wins is a decent year. I do think the product on the field regardless of the final record will be solid.

My Magic Numbers for a 7+ win season:

Worley: under 8 interceptions
Neal: 1,200 rushing.
Lane: 800 rushing.
?WR: 1,000 receiving (someone needs to be a playmaker

I'm not even gonna start on defense, but these offensive numbers would do well for us.

The scary part is that we're relying on multiple true freshmen for significant contributions at both WR and CB. Expecting numerous true freshmen to come in and "step up" is a scary proposition.
