I actually think the fan base on a whole is reasonable. I've seen some posters on here say they expect 8-9 wins and will be mad if we lose to XYZ team, but I don't think that's the fan base as a whole. I think most have pretty modest expectations (~6-6), especially considering where we've been.
As a whole, perhaps, but we're also EXTREMELY hungry for any kind of success--and if the UF game / Gameday was any indicator, the fan base will EXPLODE when we finally do.
Which sort of leads to my point...if you give a starving person food, they could harm themselves by expecting their bodies can handle more than they're capable.
Success will come, but in spurts, at least at first. We'll likely only experience it in small portions, which could cause some of the fan base to raise their expectations to unrealistic heights too fast.
However, I think Butch's "Brick by Brick" campaign is perfect in its metaphorical intent--you have to build a solid foundation before you can truly build on success. Hopefully that subliminal message seeps through.
I'll admit. I was this excited last summer and remained that way all the way up until the Trey Burton TD. I thought last year was going to be our breakout year on the field. Now I think 2015 will be that year. But I'm still excited. CBJ is building a foundation.
I approached last year's UF game as a "make or break" game for Dooley because, you're right, it very well could have been our breakout game that translated to the rest of the year.
I sat in section Q and had a perfect vantage point to the Offensive bench and what I saw from Dooley and TB spoke volumes--no leadership, none.
After the Burton TD, the sideline looked absolutely dejected but the thing that really bothered me was there was no rallying cry or motivation coming from Bray or Dooley. Bray's head was down, he moped off the field, and exhibited an extremely fragile ego--all of which was right in front of Dooley, who did and said nothing about it.
I expect the HC to light a fire under someone's a** when that happens--especially from the QB, the supposed leader of the team.
That said, I'm absolutely on the edge of my seat to see how much accountability CBJ's team exhibits on the field and the sideline. It's one thing to hang your head in defeat...but I swear to all that's Holy, to see it during a game--especially one so important and (at the time) close, as last year's UF game--is a mortal sin in my opinion.
I don't think that'll happen this year. There are leaders (FINALLY) on this team that will expect more from their teammates.
THAT is what I want to see, even more so than wins (at the moment), b/c if that DOES happen, it will inevitably lead to wins.
And Gaulden just committed.
My man crush just got a little more serious.:dance2:
