Da Reds thread

I like how the rival fans are more optimistic than the Reds fans.

I mean I'm not saying the reds are perfect by any means, their are some players that need to step up and/or some upgrades need to be made. However I don't see the need to be jumping off of cliffs 81 games in the season. You guys are a talented ball club that hold the wild card spot by 4.5 games even after a recent cold stretch and with the ace of your staff only making 9 starts thus far.

I will say I think it is the Cards division to lose and the pirates and reds will be left fighting for a wild card spot (I know both could technically get one but I would be surprised). Granted my opinion on this being the cards division could change very quickly at the end of July when they have that 8 game stretch with a 5 game series against the pirates immediately followed by a 3 game series against the Reds.

I am pretty pessimistic as a fan, but is champy really hopping on the "Votto's contract is bad because people don't throw to him" wagon?

dude we are cincy. that contract is insane for us to offer. votto is a great player but no player is worth that much. we have no money to trade or upgrade other positions. it made no sense. the reason rival fans are more optomistic than reds fans is because they just don't understand dusty sucks. except beef. dusty is horrible. the reds have alot of talent on the team, but with no right handed hitting other than phillips we are doomed. they need to trade and pick up a leftfielder and a big right handed bat or we will not catch the 2 teams in front of us. the bucs and cards will make upgrades and get better before the deadline.

If you don't pay your best players, good players won't sign with you. Simple as that

Besides, it doesn't matter if you think players are worth that much, that's what the best are getting paid, and he's one of the best

cincy cant afford it.

homer pitched great, i will stand by what i said though. without a big trade the reds won't make the playoffs. they need a big right handed bat.

Hopefully we can make some moves, but it is a nice way to start the month after a dismal end to June.

I am going counter to this Votto is a great player he deserves the $20+ mill. Nah. Votto had a couple of very good seasons. That doesn't necessarily translate into a Pujols type 10 year run. Votto was out a couple of months last season and when he came back he showed no ability to drive the ball hard. Ownership/WJ assumed he would come back from the injury and be the same as he was before. Dude's a head case at times. And when it starts happening he loses his focus on D. 10 errors at the halfway point. Almost as much as he had the previous two years combined. Hope he gets it back, but not counting on it.

The facts are he should be hitting second in the order. He is all about getting on base. He and Choo are within a half dozen of each other in combined hits, walks and HBP's. Votto is 4th in RBI's behind BP, JB and TF. TF has even had 40+ less AB's. We are past the half way point and he will have to turn 180 degrees to get anywhere near 100 RBI's. He has been hitting this way for nearly a full season worth of games over the last 2 seasons now. If he is going to be a contact, get on base type hitter at least let him move Choo into scoring position more for BP, JB and CH to knock in.

Now that Heisey is back and healthy he should be hitting 5th and Frazier 6th. Heisey is turning on the ball now - looks good. Frazier acts very confused. Fortunately he has been very good on D. The catcher is next and Cozart needs to be at the back of the order. He lunges at the ball and opens his shoulder which causes him to pull everything - even the outside junk. As a result he hits a lot of weak stuff to the left side and leads the team in DP's.

I'm OK with pitching except Broxton. If they get their heads out of their tails and start getting the job done as a unit that is.

Um, Votto has a .537 slugging the last three years. It's not like that is bad.

i think votto is a damn fine player don't get me wrong. he just isn't worth that kind of cash. nobody is, but for a small market team like the reds it is insane.

Why don't you calculate it since the injury instead of going back to the time when he deserved the acolades and to bat third. Current trends are all that matters for winning now. Until today this team was averaging like .249 with only two guys above .270. One of those guys being paid $20+ million is now a singles hitter and the king of walks. They can no longer depend on HR's to drive run production. Bruce is the only true power hitter on the team until Luddy comes back in August. When JV's sitting at 40 RBI's and BP and JB are on either side of 60 it jumps out at you that JV needs to be a table setter with Choo.

Cozart needs to take a powder. He's hitting like a girl.
