Explosion in Boston?

The 9/11 hijackers probably would have said the same thing. You don't go on the interview material, but whatever intelligence is available about what they were doing.

Christ...look at dudes Facebook and Youtube pages. I suspect the ball was dropped by somebody here.

Re the 9/11 attackers the thing we had on them was that they had overstayed their student visas; there was intelligence saying that AQ planned to use planes to make attacks; and some of these guys were taking flying lessons.

Now, that was a different time. We did not think in the same terms we do now, and information was not shared or cross-referenced like it is now.

As to the videos he posted to his youtube page, you are getting awfully close to First Amendment issues. Let's say he says he refuses to renounce terrorism. Is that enough to kick him out, given everything else about him that seems pro-US and that he says he does not plan to do anything to harm anyone?

In retrospect, sure we wish he had been flagged and either paid a lot more attention or been surveilled and caught, but how far is too far on that?

Words and associations should be enough to trigger investigation and maintain some level of awareness. Then if you see actions that you can tie into preparation for an attack, you must act. We've done it enough that it shouldn't be too much of an issue.

I don't disagree that it can create an index of suspicion that justifies paying attention. I just don't see us being able to stop it 100 % of the time in a country of 350 million people.

Yeah, we won't stop all of them, and we've had several near misses that have come very close--we've been blessed with a mixture of luck and an overabundance of police presence.

We are hindered by a still too cumbersome bureaucracy that limits what is shared between intel and law enforcement. We've made strides since 9/11 but aren't there yet.

Now the FBI is looking at the wife, Katherine Russell Tsarnaev. Apparently she marrried the older brother a couple of years ago and is a convert to Islam. She claims she works up to 80 hours a week as a home health aide while Tamerlan watched their daughter, and last saw her husband Thursday morning. And apparently she did not notice the all the bombs, guns, online extremist post, or question the time spent in Russia?

That is something I've been wondering. Where did they keep all that hardware without anybody else seeing it?

Not that hard to store a few pressure cookers in a kitchen and some guns in a closet. It isn't like they used extremely high tech bombs.

Except they weren't just storing pressure cookers in their kitchen cabinets; they were manufacturing bombs. They had to have layed out a bunch of assorted material to put together all the various pipe bombs and pressure cooker bombs.
I have no idea what their relationship was like, but if they did in fact live together and she was free to roam around her own house, it's hard to believe she didn't see something. Now, she could have just played dumb and chose to ignore what she was seeing because she was easliy controlled.:dunno:

It certainly depends on where and when these guys were making the IEDs. The fact that she lived in the house does not entail that she knew nor even that she ought to have known. Remember, bombs do not look like this anymore:

An M-4 with a selector switch for three round burst is a class III weapon. Average citizens do not have legal acess to class III weapons. One must obtain class III permits. It can be done but there is a lot of red tape and the weapons are prohibitively expensive.

She had to know something was up. Probably also knew that she'd be among the dead if she didn't look the other way...

She could be totally in the dark here. I don't tell my wife everything I do or I'm going to do. He may have treated her as a sack of crap after they were married & felt it was not important to let her in on such actions that he was doing. People do live secret lives.

She had to know about the FBI questioning her husband a year or two ago. And this odd trip back to Russia for six months. Everyone else that knew the family said they sounded more and more extremist the last two years.

By the way, my M4 comments were tongue-in-cheek, in case anybody got the mistaken notion that I am in any way pro gun-control.

yes, that's true too. But still, she may not know all that was about him. I don't care either way. But let's wait & see what happens in a couple of days.

Yes, but the FBI knew about its own questioning of him, as well as his trip to back to Chechnya. That does not mean that the FBI was in on this.

Some of you are assuming A LOT trying desperately to pin something to the wife.

It's possible that she knew. It's just as possible that she didn't know. It's possible that she knew about the questioning. It's possible that she didn't know about the questioning.
