It is a departure in the sense that they are showing what happened to him after he lost Winterfell in real time rather than in flashbacks much later on.
I don't think the show has really explained well who is tormenting him and why. I assume that is by design.
Book readers: I'm curious what your thoughts are on the Theon Grayjoy storyline.
Judged from previous comments, his current situation is a huge departure from the book. I was not expecting him to get punked that hard in last night's episode - I'm wondering what the motivation was there...

That's a fair stance.
And I agree, that slaver BBQ scene was full of win.
I can see why there's so much excitement regarding this season - it's turning into a royal rumble.
Starks vs. Lannisters; an army of Wildlings attacking from the north with ANOTHER army of white walkers right behind them and no Night's Watch, the Targarian army coming out of left field with freakin' dragons, Stanis Baratheon is still plotting, as are the Greyjoys. Then there are the freedom fighters. Craziness!!
I have a feeling that the guy who led him on the snipe hunt might be Theon's main torturer and that was part of the torment..just guessing.
