Smokey, I think if fans are going to judge Butch by whether he can win 8 games this year, they are misguided. He very well may, but I think setting that as a baseline expectation with this team and schedule is not realistic. Lots of quality coaches had 6 win seasons in their first year turning around major programs (Saban, Muschamp, Carroll, etc.).
I think I'll get tired of these forums next fall if we only win 6 and I start seeing fire Butch threads, or "Hart shoulda hired Gruden since he was there for the taking" threads. Ugh. People need to realize turnarounds take time.

I know this is going way out on a broken limb but what if they hired him to help get them out of this mess with as little restrictions as possible and help keep them out of future problems?
The UT players held a players only meeting and here is a few quotes. Pretty good stuff.
"We just felt the need to do it to hold each other accountable. I can't really say too much about it because it's a players-only meeting. But it was to let guys know that you will be held accountable on this team. Myself included," said Marlon Walls, who along with A.J. Johnson, Curt Maggitt and Dontavis Sapp was critical in the meeting being held. "That meeting was basically about that. We touched a few areas where we need to get stronger. We felt like we need to bond more as a team. We felt like we needed to get together to cover that."
"All these guys, everybody has the same mentality. Everybody's bought in to this system. Everybody's disappointed from last year, but that's team 116. This is team 117. We're moving forward, and we're going to do what we've got to do to get some wins in the column and do our thing," said redshirt freshman defensive tackle Danny O'Brien. "For the team, everybody's really holding each other accountable. We had an early workout last Friday, and it was at 6 a.m. and a couple of guys missed and everybody was held accountable. We had a team meeting with no coaches, and we held everybody accountable for who was there and who wasn't."
"The offense came out on Wednesday (April 3), and we had a terrible, terrible lift. Coach (Dave) Lawson wasn't pleased with us at all, and Friday morning we came in and had a 6 a.m. workout, and I think A.J. Johnson and Curt Maggitt stepped up and said 'Hey defense, let's join the offense. Let's come and lift. We're all a team.' Things like that," Worley said. "We had a couple guys miss it; just didn't show up. I can't speak on their part or anything, but we had a team meeting Friday after that lift. A.J. Johnson told all the players to stay in after the coaches left. He stood up, called a couple guys out and that's exactly what we need. That leadership and accountability. Hold these guys accountable to their actions. It was good to see some guys step up like that.

Off topic, but I know I can get good answers in this thread. Im working in Bristol and have been staying in Johnson City. Im thinking about staying in Kingsport for a change of scenery. Do you all recommend that idea, and if so what are some things to do in Kingsport and Johnson City.
Weve developed a nice friendship and respect for one another over the last few years, Dilfer said Saturday after the Atlanta Nike Football Training Camp at Buford High School, where he spoke to the camps participants and led the Elite 11 quarterback camp that coincided with the event.
Butch is a guy that I constantly, in my role both with the TV and Elite 11, Im always looking for good coaches and guys I think get the most from the least and the best from the best, and I put Butch in that category. I think hes a leader of people. Hes a great builder. He understands the building process, both in the plan and organization.
Hes one of my favorite coaches in football.
When I went and did the game when he was at Central Michigan, he let me kind of inside, behind the scenes, on how they do things instead of just a typical production meeting, Dilfer said. When youre confident in the way youre doing things, you let other people in to learn from it. And thats what he did with me, and I was impressed.
It was Jones big-picture perspective of how to build a program that caught Dilfers attention.
I think its not the micro its the macro, Dilfer said. Hes good at the micro, but I think he sees the thing from 30,000 feet. Every decision he makes, or that Ive seen him make, fits the vision for where you want to see the program go.
Both kids have the potential to be very good players, Dilfer said. Both are the kind of kids that we try to identify. Theyre high work capacity, high-level thinkers, and they have the physical traits to do really good things in this game.
