so the recruiting services say we bring in more talented kids, other coaches recruited the kids we have much more than the kids Vandy has, the NFL is going to draft 1 of their kids in the 6th round this year - the NFL is going to draft 4 of ours in the first 3 and likely 6 total

but yeah your right they are more talented

At the very least we'll be better on D than last year, it would be hard to get worse, no?

I agree with you that our LB core is bad and we haven't had a proven pass rusher but maybe with good coaching those things will improve. Lewis, Maggitt, Jac certainly have the ability to rush the passer. Hopefully they get it done on the field this fall.

Plenty of those guys in the front 7 were really good football players not too long ago and were given rankings, scholarship offers and accolades that proves that. So maybe it's possible with proper coaching and motivation those guys might improve and get the job done.

I think Coleman is a fine corner, he's good enough to start in this league for many teams. Maybe Gray accepts coaching (he certainly has speed) and is the other corner, maybe it's the JUCO kid we signed, he certainly doesn't lack confidence from watching his interviews.

You're assuming guys won't step up and be better because you haven't seen it yet. I'm assuming they'll be much better coached and therefore our D will be better.

We'll find out in the fall...

Man I can't wait....I hope u are right bro...but....I would be willing to bet that vandy will give us a tough, hard fought game. It will be nasty and I wouldn't doubt it if we go to overtime or if last play is won by a field goal. Like it or not...vandy beat some decent teams this past year and we can NOT take them lightly this coming season. They do have talent and even tho their coach is a big a-hole he seems to know how to get his kids to play hard and put it all on the line.

I think you're calling inexperience and our unfamiliarity with these players as fans a lack of talent.

Linebackers: We have at least one SEC caliber linebacker in AJ, maybe two if Maggitt stays at LB.

We haven't seen Brewer, Fugate, Lewis, Bynum, or Harris play very much. We don't really know how talented they are. We've seen limited action from Sapp and Crump, and I think we can say they are capable in limited reps.

To me, that's not ideal, but that seems like a serviceable LB crew, especially if we're playing lots of nickel. I don't think awful when I look at that, because I think there is potential there.

Cornerback: This, to me, is much more concerning. Losing Bonner was a significant blow to our talent and depth. We're going to be counting on freshman, particularly if we're playing lots of nickel.

It looks like Coleman, Gray, and Jones are the current front runners. After that, we have to hope Orta and Thomas can stay healthy and contribute. I think we'll also be hoping Foreman, Sutton, and Johnson can give us good reps.

Again, I don't see awful. I don't really know what they can do because I haven't seen most of them play beyond a few practice clips, a little late game action, and high school highlights.

Vandy hasn't beaten a single ranked opponent since James Franklin became their coach, have they? Beating Ole Miss, Mizzou and Uconn isn't impressive.

Franklin's a decent coach, I'll give him that, certainly better than Dooley. But the reason he hasn't beaten any good SEC teams is because he doesn't have the talent to do so.

Stop being scared of Vanderbilt.

Do I think we get to a bowl? Yes. Do I think we beat Vandy? Yes. Will players improve? I'm sure, but will it be enough? I'm just not gonna act like we have all this talent, when it's not the case.

on another note I really like the move of JRM to RB if that happens - that is a position where you can contribute early - he and Lane would be a really nice 1-2 punch - that would also allow Neal to move to a WR/RB/slot guy type role - with his speed i think he would be really effective in that type of role and bring some much needed experience to the WR core

he has been there before and has good hands so i think it would be really interesting to see this happen

I think this minset is identical to the teaching and minset of our last two coaching staffs. I think it is why a lot of coaches left. I think that our DC from last year was awful.

I think this minset is why we could not upset any of these "superior" teams.

As Coach Jones has said winning and losing is a large part mental.

Last year's staff on defense sucked every ounce of hope, desire and confidence out of the D.
The offense got tired of having to score every time they took the field. Gave up in some games.

How can you expect to win, try to win or even play constantly if you have no hope?

Never took the field as a player EVER with the thought that my team cannot win.
How miserable would that be?

This team can win every game they play this season. You cannot play to stay close....(a la kiffin) You have to adapt your gameplan and actually coach up the players ( unlike dooley/sunseri fiasco of last year) The key is to actually play the game!

Long rant....f the "realistic view" i want my team to win every game. I am a fan win, lose, or draw. Cannot stand the we can't win against "superior talent view" :hi:

Not disagreeing at all. JMO, talent only gets you so far. Otherwise, aTm would have lost to bama. 2011 aTm 6-6 regular season with a bowl win. 2012 11-2. Same talent, different mentality and mindset from players with the new coaching staff.

My hope is that we have similar results. I think that Coaches Jones and Sumlin have very similar mindsets... They have lost games, but their teams do not get beaten.
