So your retort to all of his accomplishments is to be critical of a mock draft? Impressive.

He has done well, but the simple fact is he must improve. He had two more years, and I fully expect him to be great. But to simply pull up statistics and projections and completely neglect things that were completely easy to see, such as:

Taking blocks on the wrong shoulder, allowing huge gains.

Taking blocks head on without trying to attack the RB

Losing his man in pass coverage.

Hitting through the ball carrier, vs arm tackling and slinging

Not dogging, AJ, but these were common sights, and he should improve as a junior

hialeah. loooooong time lurker, seldom poster (post 30, granted that speaks to my own issue still following recruiting at my age).

admittedly i had texted a long, hateful reply after ****ty day at work. i thought u had given us info on gator recruits.

brother. we own property in florida. and my scheduled vacation each year coincides with the annual gator alum retreat in nsb. which, why they choose nsb of allllllll the vacation spots is beyond me bru!?!

but that was very informative. have to admit. thanks.

cant wait to see my beach swamped with backwards hats, northern accents, and gold chains.

Neglect? The stats and subsequent honors (voted on by coaches and media) support and are in recognition of his achievements. To ignore this would be neglect.

The team and staff as a whole failed. AJ has been one of the few bright spots.

Agree, there (always) is room for improvement. Given the articles, sound bites, videos, etc., I think it's fair to say that AJ, the team, and staff feel the same.

We're all looking forward to seeing the progress / results on the field this fall.

I had no idea we had so many film room warriors and LB coaches in here. I will preface this by saying AJ is my favorite Vol on this team. Having said that:

AJ is a bit slow but he does the most with what he has

You can slam the guy for how he tackles or where on the field of play he makes the tackles but the man racks up tackles in numbers not many others are able to

AJ, in my opinion and mine alone, appeared to have to do more than just play ball last year. Our defense was so poorly coached and prepared that I felt he was having to line guys up and be a teacher while also trying to keep teams from hanging 60 on us. That can take away production.

Our defense was so bad that he was getting blocked and double teamed in spots where other teams linebackers would have had free reign to go and play ball.

I'm not saying AJ is All American material and one of the best we've had come through here but his entire career so far has pushed him to have to be the best of an average group. I can't help but think with a proven coach who can motivate players and get the most out of his team that AJ can improve on what was a solid pedigree to start with.

As far as all this talk of our other LB's and defensive personnel being bad...we have all known this and just have to hope that Butch continues to push this team and get the most out of them while bringing in 4 and 5 star reinforcements to help restore our place in college football. Yeah but now we don't have the freaks in the passing game. So since we abandoned the run last year(I have no idea why that idiot Chaney did it), how will we get the extra man out of the box with Blanc, Young, Carter trio at WR? If they are the best we've got a WR we're in trouble. I hope the others really step their game up and soon. Potential has to turn into production for us at the WR position.

Agreed

Oh really......I didn't like Hill at all and called him a fullback. Not tooting my own horn but I never was a fan of Hill over Cross.

This was not the back to tell to take a hike, imo. Cross is gonna be a player for somebody. I hope Dooley really has something up his sleeve.

I posted this the night Cross de committed.
247 should hire me

TRUTH. A.J. is a good football player and a good athlete. He was only a true sophomore last season, but he has to play better next season. Completely agree with Coach Thigpen. A.J. needs to make more plays and cause more turnovers next year, not make 150+ arm-grabbing tackles 20 yards down the field. I expect big things out of A.J. next season.

All A.J. Johnson did as a sophomore in 2012 was lead the Southeastern Conference in tackles.

He had 138 total. But those were just tackles, as Tommy Thigpen puts it. And those aren't enough.

"He's gotta do better," Thigpen, Tennessee's new linebackers coach under Butch Jones, said after practice Thursday morning. "He made a lot of tackles, but what we've emphasized is production.

"Tackles are tackles," Thigpen continued, "but sacks, tackles for losses, caused fumbles, fumble recoveries, that's what we want out of him this year.

"He told me he had one sack his whole career, so we've got to get that up. There's a lot of things we can do better as linebackers. There's always room for improvement."

That one sack came last season, tacked on to an already full stat line that included 8.5 tackles for loss.
Of the league-best 138 tackles, 75 were assists. He had one pass break up, one fumble recovery and eight quarterback hits.

Still, plenty of room to get better, according to Thigpen. And in 2013, less might be more.

"I thought last year we did a lot of things, some guys did too much," he said. "Just do your job. There's 10 other guys on the football field. Don't play like you're the only one out there.

"For us, fit your gap first, do your job, then go make a play. But don't play outside the system."

when I said everything Thigpen said, Volnation wanted to tar and feather me.

for our sake, lets hope we start getting Impact plays and game changing plays from AJ.

I would be ecstatic

Those same guys projecting have seen his film also and they do it for a living. As opposed to fans who tend not to be objective but overly critical. Every defensive player whiffs on a play or takes a bad angle. I know its opinion but damn.

How can those guys watch film for the 2013, 2014, and 2015 draft classes and be accurate? Kiper and McShay don't even project that far in advance.

I'll guarantee they look at stats and all-conference teams and project from there. Maybe they watch highlights on YouTube. Maybe.

The thing is, nobody is trashing AJ. Just saying we need more out of him. It's somewhat unfair to critique him last year, because with that defensive staff he probably had no damn clue what he was doing, but it's still fair to say we need more.

I got the "you don't know more than the coaches" speak for talking about AJ's game. I laugh at some of these posters so quick to defend against things they know nothing about.
Its more funny than anything else when you VN coaches critique like you're apart of the staff. The whole point is to improve every season and focus on a different skill set. Its so redundant yet fun to point it out consistently. What's Thigpens twitter handle he may need that advice to pass on to AJ and let him know to logon to VN to get that much needed advice so he can be first team SEC.

My question for you is do you just like high tackle numbers or do you like overall performance, cuz AJ doesn't get off blocks very well and doesn't force many turnovers and has maybe one sack. We really need him to be highly disruptive in the middle.

Not defending BB, I4Jay, and others, but have any of you, who are quick to criticize them, ever thought that these guys not only played football at a higher level, but may also coach it? Maybe, just maybe, they actually know what they are talking about :-0. If you don't want to read their input, then ignore them or skip their posts. Many of us actually appreciate their thoughts w/o having to skim through numerous posts afterwards that bash them for their "keyboard coach" thoughts.

I find it funny how they'll believe Mel Kiper just because he has a mic in his hand basically. Because he's never played nor coached the game of football. And I'm not hating on Mel at all but stop the madness folks and actually take a look at what some people are saying before whining about it. We say he's not playing well and explain why then go re watch some of the games. If what we say is not true then point it out after doing some research.
