In all honesty, this.

There were several in the Legislative branch that had no inclination to admit the southern states back into the Union until they had paid more than their fair share of pennance. And when I say fair share, meaning not at all since, as Ruck put it, "the victor goes the spoils."

The worst thing that could have happened to the south was that bunch of morons killing Lincoln. They killed the best friend the south had after the war.

"Mr. Squatch, I'm going to need you to take a seat over here, please. Now, why were watching young Tommy so intently and why did you show up with a six pack of wine coolers and a bag of gummy bears?"

Sqatch..."goony goo goo"....translation....I never did this before I swear...I was just going to show him around the woods.

Pretty interesting how all that happened, though. It'd be like Johnny Depp assassinating the president or something. It'd be crazy. Also, the picture of Lincoln's inauguration and the conspirators (supposedly) being in the crowd is pretty crazy, IMO.

You think that's weird you should find the weird coincidences between the Kennedy and Lincoln assassinations and read them..I'm sorry you will have to look them up. But Google "coincidences in Lincoln and Kennedy assassinations" and see what come up.

And honestly, what should have been the Confederacy's biggest proponent/sympathizer (Johnson) was completely inept when it came to Reconstruction. He gave up far too many powers to the provisional governors in the States. Also, with the impeachment, his powers were even more limited. Of course, I can Monday Morning Quarterback it since we are in the information age lol.

But overall, Johnson wasn't ready or I believe willing to let Reconstruction be as fair as it could have. And too many people with axes to grind came into the situation ready to make everyone pay for the transgressions of the few.
