Official Jon Gruden Thread XIV

My gut is telling me we are about to hire a coach that has not even been mentioned and we are all going to be pleasantly surprised. Just a feeling. Trying to stay positive.

Very likely possibility! Everything up to this point may have been a smokescreen, Gruden was very likely an early candidate (still may be) however Hart could have gotten word from the Gruden camp that it was a no-go months ago and now using him for the smokescreen for another home-run candidate that is off everyones radar. I'm still all in for Gruden however something fishy is going on here.

Both those teams that played Thursday were very good teams. Both well coached.

I guess I'm also Biased in that I'm in the Jimbo Camp if not Gruden, but I will not count him out till someone stand on the podium that isn't him.

But I do agree with you about Jimbo, the NC State game kinda throws me off, but everyone can throw a game ever now and then...Bama definitely threw the game against A&M imo.

So you're telling me we really are getting Madden? :eek:lol:

I wish we had private messaging back, I spoke to an asst. ad yesterday. I didnt hear anything close to that, would like to see if the guy i spoke to is telling somebody else something different.

Here's what I was told.

10mil total offer including assistants when we started at 8.

He kept asking for more stipulations of control. Nothing specific here

A number of times they thought it was finished as in he was going to accept.

After giving he what he wanted a number of times with only more demands they decided he never had any itentions to accept so they had to move on.

They didn't have time to worry about PR( that one pissed me off)

And that strong, gundy, fedora and fisher were the targets going forward. Fedora was least likely because of his one year tenure

Here my thoughts, even though they are short and sweet..Maybe Lex can go into more detail.:)

OK..No one can convince me that Hart just started the coaching search and that he has been sitting on his rear doing nothing for the last couple weeks..From what I heard, he was at the men's basketball game last week relaxing and taking it easy..Think about it, if he didn't have his man in the bag, don't you think he would would have been all over the place trying to get a coach locked up and ready to sign?

I think Gruden received his last payment from TB on Nov.29th or 30th..The way I understand if he takes a coaching job before the payments are complete, then he doesn't receive said payment..Can't blame him for waiting on that because he was fired from TB so he deserves every penny that comes his way.

Then there's the MNF factor..He could be waiting to finish out the season on Dec.17th which is in Nashville..Coincidence..I think not..Then again this may not be a factor at all..Just throwing in my :twocents:.

Just think it's too soon(no pun intended) to throw in the towel..I'm in the minority but that's ok I can understnad how others feel.

Good morning Smokey.

I don't know whether it's true or not but someone posted in the cliff notes yesterday that his restrictions from TB ended last year so he can coach without losing money. Also I think there is one more MNF game after the one in Nashville on the 17th. I do agree I think the story leaking may have caused him to back away. Whether he comes back to the table or not is the million dollar question.

Whatever you do, don't mention any names, because that will immediately remove them from the list. :)

Just throwing this out there

How bout NIU HC? Dude has won 2 Mac championships in a row.

Has a 23-4 record and 1-0 in bowls. Was dc of wisconsin for five years before NIU

Patrick trust me when I say this I have very good knowledge of how compliance works within an AD. A coach that has full control of it has way too much power when a compliance director is giving NCAA interpretation. Compliance directors can interpret rules differently from school to school to school and when an AD doesn't over see those that spells potential big trouble down the road. My opinion is a coach like gruden wants total control of compliance because he would want a director that has interpretations that are very liberal regarding voluntary activities such as watching film.

You said in a previous post to lex that you dont think he really wanted that control. Which is it?

I think everybody is taking the agent quote out of context.

He was specifically responding to the assertion by Hagris that they had been offered a contract and were only apart on assistant money.

He DID NOT say that Jon Gruden coaching at UT was fantasy, or anything like that.

He said that the notion that they had a contract offer was fantasy.

Why can't people understand the difference between the 2?

In my last post(the long one) I forgot to discuss Gruden's agent's remarks but you summed it up perfectly.

Regardless of what happens, I think that the AD list that has been floating around for three weeks is bunk.

I hope you are right about that Lex.

Because otherwise, we will spend the next decade looking for the next up and coming coach to help us turn the corner.

We are dangerously close to falling into the abyss. I hope the people that make the final decision do better than many of our fans seem willing to accept.

Every time I start to think about the possibility of Hart messing this hire up or Gruden just using us for publicity/hype, I keep coming back to several things:

1. Why in the world would Hart take the risk of pissing off the fan base, the boosters, and destroying the universities athletic department. I'm not a Hart fan but I can not wrap my brain around the fact that he is really so stupid that he thinks he's going to do what he wants to do, disregard what everyone else wants, and think it's going to come out okay for him. Really? He'd have to be a special kind of stupid to think that's going to work out him.

2. If Gruden really wasn't interested, why the harsh response from LeMonte. It's been stated before, if he wasn't interested, why didn't he issue a nice statement like he has in the past. And why was the statement not issued to a national publication/media outlet? If you're going to squash this rumor, squash it good!

3. There has been no statement from Gruden or the University. Not saying there ever will be but that fact keeps me from believing this thing is dead.

Until someone else is announced or walks up to the podium announced as the next HC, I will keep the faith and give Hart and Gruden the benefit of the doubt. Just my :twocents:

Serious question for you Lex, in regards to Hart and this search, regardless of the status of Gruden, in your opinion is Hart doing what is best for his future or Tennesse's?

I believe we will know by the 15th at least. I know for a fact that some of the players will be leaving around that time.

On another note. Does anyone find it strange that Hubbs says Strong was interviewed yesterday, yet it isn't national news.

My vote would be that if we have to settle for Dooley 2.0, may as well just let Chaney run the show for at least a year.

Why not...If we have to settle for Dooley 2.0, the last Coordinator we Promoted to HC won a National Title.

If that's the case though, I'd rather See Greg Roman. He wants to Wear the Orange and White. If we have to settle for someone like Golden, I'd rather give Roman the shot.

Not reported. I have posted a number of times I have one high ranking booster that I talk to regulary. The "I was told" post are coming from him. He spoke with an assistant AD on Thursday and was told what I have posted.

And likewise, other prominent persons in this situation are saying that the deal was but done and it derailed sometime last night. Same persons are saying that Hart has been against Gruden since day 1 and that Hart is an @@@.

Obviously if Hart did not want Gruden then he and the athletic dept will spin this so as to put the blame on the Gruden Camp. And likewise the power donors will begin and have begun to leak info that insinuates that Hart derailed the Gruden deal.

Have been completely out since mid day yesterday. Made several posts, argued with people that said I said things I never did, then bowed out for a while.

I do firmly believe the blame in this, if blame has to be assigned, falls more on Grudens side than UT's. I think it became very apparent he was not wanting to come here, and his demands and unwillingness to bend at all forced UT to move on. In the end I think he was just not "up for the challenge".

Again, if he doesn't want to be here, enjoy the NFL and ESPN. Its been so long since I gave a **** about the NFL I thought Joe Montana was still the 49ers QB lol.

I follow and care about one sport and one sport only, college football. The NFL is boring as hell to me.

College football is my passion as well.. SEC football to be more specific.. I wasn't even aware of who Gruden was, really, until his name fell out of everyone's mouth and I did some research.

I don't know WHO to blame but I will say this.. If JG allowed his agent to talk about TN like that and not correct him, then **** him and his attitude.

I just don't know anymore..

The no search firm thing is getting me right now. Hart better pull a rabbit out his hat for that reason alone.

Again your key words are "my opinion is"!! Didnt Kiffen push the envelop? but blackburn kept things in line.

again point being this is only your opinion! not even any media source is reporting this.

I answered a question about why an AD would say no. It was a hypothetical question asking for an opinion. What else is there to discuss other than an opinion when a question is asked based on opionion?

Didn't Hart say at the press conference that he was going to talk to some coaches at the Hall of Fame thing, and then would announce a decision after that? If that is what I recall, then everything is going as he said initially.

....and if any of this were true you don't think Hart would have told Hyams and Hubbs that???? Really? REALLY?
