The Runner's thread

Not the best start to the week. Ran 6k on Monday but my shins hurt so badly I had to stop and walk back home instead of carrying on. I reckon it's because I am over doing it maybe... Not sure. I stretched and drunk water before hand like I usually do..

stephen make sure you are stretching before and after and also check your shoes. It could be time to change shoes or the shoes could be the wrong shoes for your feet. If everything seems to check out ok as far as stretching and shoes then ice your shins for 20-30 mins before running and after and that will help with the shin splints... atleast it worked for me.

3.2 last night at 7:06 pace. Going to try and get a trail run in this morning so I don't feel so much like a fat a$$ after the thanksgiving feast.

So much for starting out easy. Six miles this morning. Got to the two mile point and felt great so I just kept going. The hills of East Tennessee caught up to me though. Hills 1, vfb 0. Finished with an 8:34 pace.

Four mile trail run this morning. 33 min total time. Great day for a trail run. Had two doe cross the trail while running. Happy thanksgiving to all my runner friends out there.

Couple miles through the 'hood this morning. Didn't bother timing, I had the pup with me so I was poop-scooping as well as running.

Where are the best trails to run in the Knoxville area?

Concord park off Northshore Drive is nice. Haw Ridge is another good one. My only complaint about Haw Ridge is it's not well marked. Immposible to get lost but you have to have a good sense of direction to stay on the trail. Haven't been there in a year though so they may have made some improvements.

Cool. I know both from mountain bike experience. Concord is pretty hilly...Haw Ridge seems like a better choice, especially if you stay along the lake/perimeter.

I ran half a half-marathon today, 7:45 pace. Feeling a half in my future, maybe in Florida in January or February. Then, I'll see...may want to go all the way.

Haw would definitely give you more variety. Good place for a moderate run or hills

3.25 tonight hill repeats. Trail overlooking the city. It was pretty watching the lights come on as the sun set.

I had a great run going tonight. I thought the cold air might give my lungs a little trouble but I was doing fine. I was just coming to the bottom of a long hill about a mile in when my dog decided that this was the perfect opportunity to take a huge **** in the middle of the street. Needless to say, I didn't finish my run. I thoroughly enjoyed walking the mile back to my apartment with a bag full of dog crap in my hands though.

So how long is the tendonitis in my right achilles going to take to completely go away? I started running regularly two years ago and got up to 5-6 miles 5-6 days a week, after finally "retiring" as a competitive swimmer. In July my achilles started feeling sore but just kept running. Two months later it hurt to walk, but stubbornly I kept running at the same rate. Finally in September folks convinced me to stop. I can get it to where it doesn't hurt now and feels normal, but as soon as I try a single light run (even on a treadmill), its two steps back. These eliptical workouts in its place are getting boring. Biggest problem may be that I am in my mid-50s and trying to exercise like I am in my 20's-30's.

Have you checked with your physician to make sure you didn't do any damage down there? Running through the same pain for two months is a really bad idea. It'll probably take longer to get back to normal than you were running on it.

I did. He said he could put me in a boot to speed up healing, but otherwise just ice it a lot and wait it out. Could be anywhere from 6-10 months total I am told by others who have done the same. Oh well, yet another learning experience.

Sorry to hear man. You've got to listen to your body and figure out when you should and shouldn't run through pains. Hope your recovery goes quicker than expected so you can get back out there.

3.4 this morning. 7:30 pace. First chance I have had to run in a week due to moving into a new house. Hope to get back on schedule this coming week
