I really don't get the Internet sometimes.
I don't have inside sources. I take what people say on message boards with a grain of salt. I think most media outlets and reporters are full of it.
Today has only convinced me that Gruden to TN is certainly happening. Hargis's story is beyond solid, and his sources are more reputable than anyone else tied to this.
First off, you can't officially kill this thing until another coach is announced in a press conference. That's the way this game works. No one involved in the hiring process from the UT side or Gruden's side can be trusted right now. That being said, if you want to do your best to kill it, you get a quote from Dave Hart. That hasn't happened. After that, you get a quote from Jon Gruden. That hasn't happened (The ESPN article is not a quote from him, it's a culmination of all the sky is falling crap from earlier today). Most certainly, you don't have an agent kill it in a way that aggressively makes it sound like it's not happening. Jon Gruden, to his agent, is a commodity. Why would you devalue your commodity by publicly removing/vaguely insulting an interested party? You don't. The reason you make this statement is for misdirection purposes. Your agent's job is to get you hired, for as much money as he can. Why would you shoot yourself in the foot like that? You don't, unless you're merely looking to get some heat off of you, and your client, for the time being.
Secondly, his statement does NOT discredit what Hargis has been saying all day. At all. If it did anything, it enforces it, by presenting the notion that Gruden is somehow out of UT's league (meaning we'd need more money) which directly ties in to the hangup between us and Gruden's assistants' salaries.
As much as I like Hargis and value his reporting work, even his main scoop (assistant money) probably isn't the real issue here. Jon has a job already. Monday Night Football. Jon Gruden is a man of integrity. The football season isn't over, and as it's been reported already, he already definitely has an interview with RG3 coming up and a Redskins game to announce on Monday. I don't see Gruden leaving ESPN hanging like that. After all, if for some reason it doesn't work out at UT - you don't want to burn bridges.
I'm not saying that I think he'll stick around for the full cycle of MNF this year, but it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest. More importantly, if it's approaching that deadline and we still haven't made a hire - common sense should tell us who it's going to be.
This cycle that we're witnessing of good news, bad news, GREAT NEWS, EARTH ENDING BAD NEWS, slightly good news, slightly bad news....yadda, yadda, yadda is so predictable and IMO way more telling than any of these "leaks" that are coming out right now. Follow the money that we moved - that's not to hire a no name. Follow the non-denials from Gruden and Hart. Finally, use some rationality and put the real pieces together.
Oh, and sorry for the novel.
TLDR version: Calm down, Gruden's probably coming, this is all part of the process.
