Official Jon Gruden Thread XIII

Money just don't make sense, the money is there. I am in a wait and see mode because anything can happen.

Exactly. Wouldn't that have come up, I don't know, anytime over the past couple of months? That would be such a relatively easy thing to discuss. Things couldn't have gotten so far without that bridge having been crossed already.

I didnt even pay attention to the date on the BIG news in OU. Big FAIL on my part in being hasty. If re-upping on the series with Nebraska is big news in Norman, then my goodness that must be a boring place to be.

I don't think their "BIG" announcement has happened yet.

Former Vol and NBA player Tobias Harris...

@tobias31: Hopefully we can close the deal on Gruden, you never know what can happen! #Vols

Folks do not forget it would greatly benefit the AD to publicly announce that Gruden had been eliminated as a candidate IF it were true. It has not happened. As often repeated, to allow the rumors to continue, if false, only hurts the University and the program.

I agree completely.

I understand what some are stating that you never admit your defeats etc..but in this case, with such high profile press, it can only BENEFIT you to announce you tried, but will get a great coach nontheless...

IMO

...If Hart botched this, the boosters will let it be known...

This. Boosters don't put up huge money, countless hours, and use their connections to end up hiring Al Golden. That's something we could do easily any day. You can't tell me our "candidates" wouldn't jump at the chance to coach in the SEC. It's Gruden (or someone equally big) or the boosters are going to flip their ****

I'll miss this thread--but we've got a day or two to start a big honking futile one on Stoops, if we hurry! Gruden did not want to return to the college game--which he should have said to us early on. I think the staff money bit is BS--I've no doubt we were prepared to offer him serious money for a staff. There were lots of other issues, according to Sterling, who seems to have a very credible source, but at the end of the day Gruden didn't want to a college job--and Hart wasn't prepared to let him run the athletic department.

If you think Gruden wanted to "run the athletic department" you are not too smart. Yea Gruden Running the UT, swimming team, soccer, lady vols. Yea, thats his dream...Everyone knew he wanted control over the football team, and should have gotten it. I should have known Hart would screw this up when his last words at his press conf. were "I have a level of knowledge no one else has". He is a know it all Alabama dick. And I mean that in the nicest way possible!!!!!!!!!

I understand that. Winning is the only thing that will return a long term profit. But the "opportunity cost" is a very real concept when comparing Gruden to others on the
short term. I'd rather pay a guy like George Quarles (193-13 (.937), 62-4 (.939) in playoffs, 9-2 (.818) in state title games) $400,000/year and "hope" for long term success then pay a guy like Larry Fedora $3M + buyout costs for that same "hope"

Oh...my...God.

According to "my sources" most people on this site don't have sources. Great quotes such as, SOON, the ink is dry, it's a done deal, blah blah blah.....at this point I could give 2 ****s if Gruden comes or not. This program needs some stability and a man who's ready to be at Tennessee for 10-15 years and bring UT back from the gates of hell. Peace out dreamers, I'm off to the 1pm press conference.

If you think the AD and Dave Hart have been sitting on their thumbs, you aren't in touch with reality.

Okay then you think it is scenario #1, they have been in negotiations and then the deal fell through at the last minute.

If you get that close and the deal falls through how can you believe it is the fault of anyone else besides the AD not wanting Gruden??

No, it is better than that. The Big Boys armed Hargis and THEY are calling Hart out. He will not be able to hide behind his BS leak that "Coach Gruden just wasn't interested."

This.

If this is really what's playing out, it will be a blast watching it unfold.

Not an OG but I would definitely be pleased with Patterson, Peterson, or Stoops if we don't get Gruden. Not the immediate "wow" factor but, quality coaches that will get UT back on track.

If we end up with one of the other names being kicked around (Fisher, Strong, Smart, Jones, Davis, Fedora, Golden, etc) UT will be wondering in the desert for years to come.

I agree with this. Tier two sucks except for Butch.

Been in the field all day. I miss anything?

yes. The Gruden thing doesn't appear to have worked out. Some are still holding out hope saying that this was the plan all along so Hart can look like a hero.

Others are saying it's all Hart's fault and are ready with their torches and pitchforks because they have to have somebody else to blame other than "king Gruden" and their own unrealistic expectations.

And Hart will be posting his resume on Craigslist.

Money runs this program, Hart might try and fight back but he will not win this battle. Again, if the comments are true.

I really need to stop clicking on Like instead of Quote...

SIAP but Carlos Younger on TOS says he has heard rumblings about Bob Stoops stepping down at Oklahoma today. This may or may not have any coincidence to Hart being in Oklahoma last night.

So, after 14 seasons, Stoops is going to announce he's stepping down the day before the last game of the regular season, with the Big 12 title still a possibility.

I don't know who first started this rumor, but this screams Troll Job.

It will be interesting to see this play out. And as long as this has been in play (since spring?) it will take a definitive statement directly from the 2 parties involved, before I believe it was a money issue.
