Official Jon Gruden Thread XIII

With all of the hype surrounding this, I absolutely hate to say this, but it probably is best that Gruden doesn't come.

Here is why: there is NO way he can live up to the hype. None. When things get so built up, there is always a let down. If Gruden goes 8-4 next year, it's bad.

On the other hand: If UT gets any other coach, the fan base will be very down, but at least he will get a chance to exceed expectations because there will be none. If this unnamed next coach goes 8-4, it is a huge improvement both to us and the national media.

I have no "inside" information, this is just me trying to be objective and perhaps a little optimistic.

We've not been 8-4 in 5 seasons... How is that bad?

I fully believe him and a few others in the AD have f'ed this up. Boosters tried as hard as they could but our AD sucks!

I agree with this in its entirety.

Only two possible scenarios and results, and both outcomes are the result of the AD effing this up.

1. the AD has been in negotiations with Gruden since the Dooley firing and the AD wouldn't budge on giving up power/assistant salaries/insert reason... and Gruden Declined. IMO, if you get this close and don't get it done, then the AD obviously effed up.

2. The AD has been sitting on its thumb for two weeks while the Grumors were spreading like wildfire throughout the fanbase and never made a comment on the search, leading the fanbase into a fever pitch over getting Gruden... and then finally contacted Gruden and was politely told no thanks. IMO, if this happened then the AD should be replaced immediately for incompetence.

Gruden is not the only coach that can win here so this argument doesn't hold water.

Regardless of who the coach is, there is a risk they will lose and a chance they will win. If they win, fans will come and $ will be made.

The margin is a lot more forgiving with a $6 million coaching staff than $9 million.

You don't hire a head coach for his first three games, that would be ignorant.

I understand that. Winning is the only thing that will return a long term profit. But the "opportunity cost" is a very real concept when comparing Gruden to others on the
short term. I'd rather pay a guy like George Quarles (193-13 (.937), 62-4 (.939) in playoffs, 9-2 (.818) in state title games) $400,000/year and "hope" for long term success then pay a guy like Larry Fedora $3M + buyout costs for that same "hope"

Nobody is going to be mad of Gruden goes 8-4 next year.

Seen Hargis for several years. No site to push money to him by getting people to sign up ect........ He is a news man and I fully would stand by what he would say and the stand he is making. Especially over the Knox idiots.

Either Hart is trying to look like a hero in the end or he is the most ecotistical AD who will be fired because he is the Bammer who costs us CJG. Hate bammers ever since that stupid bear helped run GT out of the SEC.

Screw Bama and Hart!

Don't a lot of these reporters and radio personalities have personal twitter pages that they can use to post things that don't link then to their parent company?

I'm not calling BS on this just yet. I read all his tweets, this could very well be him.

Not trolling here.

Sorry, its ESPN_Colin

maybe so, but CC's real tweet is in the cliff notes.

Since it directly contradicts what he posted on his REAL ESPN twitter feed, I'm not buying it. He's an idiot, but nowhere near that stupid.

I get off at 5. Basketball game at 6:30. Plenty of time for mattress burning

They are asking $80 dollars for basketball tickets this is crap. Finally get a chance to go to a Tennesse sporting event in D.C. and they want me to shell out close to $200 dollars between two tickets and concessions.

Serious question for the OG's, will ya'll still be disappointed with Hart if we were to end up with Patterson or Petersen or someone similar in quality?

Not an OG but I would definitely be pleased with Patterson, Peterson, or Stoops if we don't get Gruden. Not the immediate "wow" factor but, quality coaches that will get UT back on track.

If we end up with one of the other names being kicked around (Fisher, Strong, Smart, Jones, Davis, Fedora, Golden, etc) UT will be wondering in the desert for years to come.

Hart said money would not be a problem...

So if Hargis is saying he is 100% on his reporting and essentially putting his career on the line, and saying the only hiccup is assistant salaries...

So where does that leave us?

Deny deny deny... BOOM.

On phone, can't type well...my take- no official announcement from AD or Gruden"s camp. All "sources" on both sides. Why believe one more than the other? Still think its Gruden until official announcement. Would take 5 minutes in front of a mic. Why hasn't either side done it

Gruden

I live in a little town in northern Illinois where nobody here knows any of this stuff. I am out running around town screaming and burning mattresses and people are just looking at me like wtf. Oops I see the town cop driving at me now.....gotta run.

You people blaming the AD here have no idea what's going on. I'm sure Hart tried. Heaven forbid Gruden declined!

I find it funny that anybody here acts like they actually know 100% what happened or is happening and are now blaming it all on Hart.

Wait until someone announces something. If Hart botched this, the boosters will let it be known.
