5-at-10: Friday mailbag on Gruden, creating the perfect coach and SEC football coaches as gangsters | timesfreepress.com

Stephen A. Hargis has had a big week, there's no doubt. The Dooley recruiting stuff, the prospects in the state saying they would like to talk to Jon Gruden and then the big hammer in today's newspaper.

Now it's important to know the following two things about the UT-Gruden deal: First, the offer is verbal, so if/when the non-denial, denials start coming and someone says, "There has not been a contract offered," please know we expected this. And Stephen wrote the A1 story accordingly.

Secondly, there is a big bridge needed to cover the gap between offering a job to Jon Gruden and landing Jon Gruden.

As for the recruiting stuff and the inattention to our area, well, we were flat-out stunned by that to tell the truth. And the fact that Vonn Bell came to have his Best of Preps picture made Thursday in all-Alabama gear screams of the inattention to the area in some ways.

Can someone explain why Hargis's report is so ballsy? All I am getting from it is that we extended an offer to him. I just don't see what all the hoopla is about. If he says that Gruden is coming and that he puts his reputation on the line, then I'll be assured. But he just said we offered him.

He said that as of last night, Gruden wanted to be our coach, and if we meet his demands he will be our coach--otherwise the AD dropped the ball.

Are the crickets in the stadium going to pay for their seats in the first 3 home games next year with a Fedora as coach? Austin Peay, Western Kentucky, South Alabama?

Gruden is not the only coach that can win here so this argument doesn't hold water.

Regardless of who the coach is, there is a risk they will lose and a chance they will win. If they win, fans will come and $ will be made.

The margin is a lot more forgiving with a $6 million coaching staff than $9 million.

You don't hire a head coach for his first three games, that would be ignorant.

If we don't hire Gruden, RIP UT football. Its been a fun ride. We will have to build a new smaller stadium so that we don't look like a## clowns on television. At this rate Vandy will be better than us soon.... wait.... that already happened.

I think we've already accomplished this when we gave up over 700 yards to Troy.

IF this is true and it turns out we botched the hire, then:

if this is true and i am going to get even more bat chit crazy then i already am and start believing the conspiracy that they are all here to keep us down.

Personally, if the only root source of the rumor that Gruden has pulled out is Jimmy Hyams, I don't believe it. Hyams lost his insider status when he set up Hamilton to throw Pearl under the bus while the team was on its way to play Michigan in the NCAA's. So Hyams only gets crumbs, not real truth.

He is basically calling hart out. The UTAD is putting out that Gruden was never interested enough to discuss contract/money. Hargis is claiming Hart blew it.

No, it is better than that. The Big Boys armed Hargis and THEY are calling Hart out. He will not be able to hide behind his BS leak that "Coach Gruden just wasn't interested."

prolly get flamed for this but i would rather have smart than fisher....at least smart has proven he can win the big games with elite talent!

Smart's current record is 0-0 because he's never coached a game. Jimbo Fisher is 29-10 and 2-0 in bowl games as a head coach. Step away from the keyboard before you hurt yourself.

Dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb.

It took him two weeks to get a "No thanks, not interested" out of Jon Gruden?? And it never even got as far as financial discussions?

What in the EFFFF has he been doing since Nov. 17th?? Sitting on his damn thumb?

Gruden should have been his first call, with a serious offer. You get that out of the way immediately. Either he will be interested or he will say no thanks. This should have been over a week ago.

Instead, Hart let it fester because, as many have stated, he is intimidated by the idea of having someone as big as Gruden working here because he would lose all power.

It is obvious that Hart wants to bring in someone he can control. Welcome Kirby Smart and welcome to the era where the Liberty Bowl would be a great season.

Agreed but with our financial state right now, you don't hire a coach that you're gonna have to wait and see after their first season when a guy like Gruden would sellout his first orange and white game.
