Recruiting Forum: Football Talk II

There will be no afternoon press conference today for a new football coach at the University of Tennessee, nor was Jon Gruden ever presented with any contract or financial details to become the Volunteers' next football coach. So say sources extremely close to UT's search for Derek Dooley's replacement.

Some half-dozen sources have told VolQuest.com this morning that Gruden both declined an offer to meet with UT officials, most notably vice chancellor and director of athletics Dave Hart, this week and that neither side ever got to a point where a financial framework was outlined.

"We reached out to coach Gruden. Coach Gruden after visiting with his family informed us that it was not a move his family wanted to make at this time. He declined to meet with Tennessee. Financial considerations were never discussed," said a University source Friday morning.

The news comes on the heels of a report in Friday's editions of the Chattanooga Times Free Press that alleged Gruden was mulling over an offer and could decide on his own timeframe, a report labeled "irresponsible" by someone familiar with proceedings.

- Vol Quest. University is saying no Gruden.

If he doesn't win, how long will that last? Two yrs? three yrs? If he doesn't win after a couple of yrs. then we are back to nobody coming to games, boosters wanting him to be fired, and having to once again go through another buy out. His name will only go so far without wins.

This is a loser mentality. Of course nothing is guaranteed, but we should get the coach that gives us the best chance of winning. There is absolutely no way Gruden is unsuccessful at UT. I guess you want us to hire another Doofus?

How did Dungy fare with "his" players. Winning a Super Bowl isn't like being set up for a NC like Larry Coker was.

He won 5 divisional titles in 11 seasons, not bad for so called average.

Face it, Gruden is the hottest name on the market right now and recruiting isn't a concern, whatsoever.

Gruden is 87-82 in seasons other the one where he won the Super Bowl with Dungy's players...

I'm not saying he's not a good coach...I'm saying you don't spend more money on him than Saban or Meyer...they've proven themselves over and over at the highest levels of college football and Gruden has not...

6 million on Gruden is like going all in with 3 of a kind

If you want a nice car and have the money, are you going to buy a Honda Civic or a Rolls Royce?

I think this is a bad analogy. One of my friends is a doctor - he drives a Prius because he has no ego and doesn't want to spend big money on a depreciating asset. I have other friend that make decent money but are in debt up to theirveyenalls driving Mercedes, but it's important to them.

So if you're trying to say its good for our big ego, then I agree. If you want a coach that has been there, done that then Gruden isn't your guy.

Why pay for something that could be a Roll Royce look on the outside but could be sitting on a Honda Civic engine and body. Thats why you test drive it first before putting out the money for it. lol

I agree that Gruden will be great here if he comes, I just don't think it will happen if he holds the university hostage over being paid the most money in college football history.

So you're going to subtract a Super Bowl year? And on top of that who has won at the Raiders consistently while under Al Davis besides Gruden?

Would Saban or Meyer leave their current jobs to coach at UT for $6M?

And so it is dead....

Let the finger pointing begin.

It's not dead. The "University source" card is such BS. Didn't Hubbs also say something about $6M being the number? His stories don't add up, and he's proven not to be in the know in any of this. We'll know who the new coach is when it is announced by the University directly with a name attached to it. Until then, I firmly believe it's Gruden.

What do you think about this report OCI?

Is that not from the horse's mouth?

Think I'm going to just watch ESPN for my new coach. I've started to check-out on this situation. If it's a BS coach I'm switching my fanhood for his entire contract. I'm about done with this BS.

Come on OCI thats a weak and low come back. I didn't know you were going to guarantee something that changes everything.

Irrelevant...we're talking about market value here...those coaches have proven they deserve that money...Gruden has not

My point is that UT has to pay a premium to get a coach the same caliber as Saban and Meyer. We cannot pay market value. Supply/demand principles are in play.

No, they didn't. That's from Hubbs, not UT. It says, "per sources" in what Hubbs wrote. Where is the release from the university saying Gruden is out?

I'm just tired of following it, honestly. I'll just roll with that until something substantial comes out.

I just can't see the University keeping it a secret until now. Too many definitive "it's a done deal" or "we have no chance," and it's obnoxious.

Well if that is the case, then personally, I would prefer they dish out that premium to someone that has been involved in coaching and winning a little more recently than 4 years ago. I don't think this search should be Gruden or bust.
