Advanced Metrics Nonsense

remember like, not long ago, when people were convinced he wasn't the best player in the world

Ty Lawson has been playing horribly, and that should change, but other than that Karl is up to his old tricks. Mcgee was replaced by Gallo who airmailed a shot on a critical possession, and didn't go after a loose ball that was clearly last touched by Lawson on the next play:

The Nuggets entered the fourth quarter down twelve points. Things looked grim. However, some good play and things turned around. JaVale McGee in particular played amazing. In the first four minutes of the final qurter he went three for four, pulled down two rebounds (one offensive) and got a block. And with 7:39 left to go and the Nuggets down by three, Karl pulled McGee. It was at this point my brother turned to me and asked “Wait, he’s taking McGee out of the game?”

And McGee stayed out the rest of the game. In a mere 21 minutes McGee racked up 18 points (shooting 75%!!), 6 boards and 4 blocks and yet, he was nowhere to be found in a game that went down to the wire.

Explaining the Nuggets Losing Woes Firsthand

Tyson Chandler has an amazing stat line tonight. 3 points and 3 rebounds while getting his lunch ate by Randolph and Gasol.

Yeah, he's a top 10 player in the NBA. Laughable.

Where do you get your info?

He had 7 points (3 for 4) and 7 rebounds, 1 steal and only played 28 minutes. I'm sure guys you think are in the top 10 have mediocre performances. He played 2 nights in a row on the road against teams that are deep with bigs (and the Knicks play most of the game with 1 big, no PF)..

I get my info from watching the game instead of looking at some nonsensical advanced metric or just looking at stats.

The stat line I posted was in the third quarter.

He got his ass handed to him by Randolph and Gsaol.

I can't help you if you actually watch the games and think he's near a top ten player. You're either blind or haven't a clue about the game.

Dwight Howard had 6 points and 8 rebounds against Golden State's dominant bigs a few games ago. I suppose this disqualifies him from the list of top 10 players?

Again, do you think maybe Chandler gets a little slack for playing 1 against 2 two nights in a row on the road against tough teams?

Tobias Harris is shining in his limited time playing. He's been very efficient.

Second best true shooting percentage on the team and an offensive rating of 117.

His PER is still pretty average though, and his defensive rating is second to last on the team.

PER is a joke of a stat...I don't know defensive rating. Have to look into that, but his D seems to be average.

PER isn't above and beyond all the other stats, but I just like looking at it as a very, very rough comparison between players.

Defensive rating is an estimate of how many points a team allows per 100 possessions. 100 is average, higher is worse. Problem with it for individual players is that it can be heavily dependent on team defense.

How valuable is J Kidd, right? Chandler goes for 28 and 10 only missing 1 shot, and they still lose.

Lopez had 22 points on 20 FGA and 5 FTAs, 0 assists, and 3 turnovers. That's a win for Chandler and the NY defense.

Williams also had 14 assists. He was in the lane all day.

Last night's game proved how overrated you have Chandler. He's a top 5 center that is good (not great) defensively and has very little offensive game other than putbacks and slam dunks.

If he was the best offensive player on a team, that team would be lucky to win 30 games.

How does last night's game prove anything?

Chandler is playing without a PF, and I got Gahlee telling me he sucks because he can't dominate Gasol AND Randolph, and I got you telling me I have him overrrated because he can't stop D-Will when he's already worrying about Lopez AND Hump.

The idea that Chandler can't be a top 5 player because he is limited offensively is proof that your eyes lie to you. Think about it like this...defensive players never win NFL MVP...does this mean defensive players aren't as valuable, or does it mean sportswriters can't accurately assess the value of good D? I'm leaning towards the latter. Our inability to accurately value D prevents us from considering Ben Wallace, Dennis Rodman, Tyson Chandler, etc. among the league's top few players. It's human nature.
