Advanced Metrics Nonsense

You know who's done surprisingly well this year? Kyle Singler. 2nd on his team in TS%, tied for first on the team in offensive rating. Still last on his team in usage% though.

Been a really nice surprise. Going to be a guy who can stretch the floor.

Tyson Chandler is ranked 38th among NBA centers in usage rate.

He's not even in the top 400 for the NBA.

Wanna know why his efficiency numbers are skewed?

That's why. Let's give him Brook Lopez' usage rate then see what happens.

Usage rate does not measure what you do without the ball. Our argument basically hinges on whether or not he can be an elite player based on what he does without the ball. Citing usage rate is useless, IMO.

The gods of basketball wins care not why Lopez misses so many shots, they only care that he misses so many shots.

And that's completely laughable.

I don't understand why you can't get this. It's so simple.

Tyson Chandler is a good player. He's not a great player, nor a top 10 player like you said.

Top ten in efficiency? Sure.

Chandler has such a high eFG% and TS% quite simply because he takes about 90% (and that's actually correct, not an exaggeration) of his shots within five feet. Highest in the NBA.

Of course he's going to have a higher field goal percentage.

Also, look at his per 36 shots. He averages 7.3. If he got 14 a game and had an offense run through him, would he actually be shooting 70%? NO!!!! Not at all.

He only takes about two shots: putbacks, and pick-n-roll dunks/layups.

If Shaq only did that in his prime, he would have shot 80% from the field.

Also, you love rebounds. Chandler is 27th in rebounding rate this year. For an "elite" player and "elite" big man, that's not good, especially in today's league.

You don't get more points for shooting low % shots. What is laughable about this concept?

Is Tyson Chandler taking 18 shots a game and having an entire offense run through him like Dwight Howard in Orlando?

No. That's why it's laughable.

When I assess a player, a concern for taking too few shots is the last thing on my mind. For you it is important. The argument boils down to that. I think a player can have a huge impact on the game of basketball with only 7 FGA per game.

I'm not sure if you are aware, but Chandler shot 68% last year...highest in 39 years. Chandler is shooting 72% right now, which would be 2nd all time. You make it sound like anybody can do what he is doing.

Faried and McGee need to play a combined 65 minutes each night, and that's not happening. On top of that Lawson has played poorly, and AI has been good, but not as good as you expect out of him. They'll likely bounce back, but they're not going to be elite unless they play the right bigs.

Wow, the Knicks kicked the Heat's ass in Miami without Melo? Who could've ever predicted this?

BTW, Chandler goes for 8 offensive rebounds, and 8/10 shooting the other night. He's definitely limited offensively, but you can't tell me he doesn't have a huge impact on that side of the floor. Dude is setting screens on every trip down the floor, he's just always active.

Pretty cool stat here.

When Mj enter the league NBA offenses were averaging 110 points per game.

When Kobe enter the league offenses were averaging 96 points per game.

Sorry if the numbers are a little off it was 8 AM when i heard that.

Tysion Chandler had 23, shot 9/10 with 10 rebounds, and 2 steals in their win last night. 2-0 without Melo.

12/16/12 Leaders in Wins Produced:

1. Durant = 6.0
2. Varejao = 5.7
3. CP3 = 5.1
4. Chandler = 4.9
5. Kidd = 4.5
.
.
.
117. Melo = 1.3

Melo's got little to do with their winning. Yeah he's blown up in wins, but he's also been carried by them in several games as well. No matter what he does, they win a lot.

Durant is well above average for his position as far as rebounds go, and Melo is just about average. Durant gets twice as many assists, more steals, and more blocks.

They are both primarily known for scoring, but they aren't even in the same conversation, efficiency-wise. On average, NBA players score 1 point per FGA. Points above par is a measure of how many points above average you produce. In other words, it's a measure of the advantage you give your team just based on scoring ability.

Durant is 6.3 points over par per game
Melo is 4.3 points over par per game

It might seem like a close margin, but really, Durant is 50% more efficient.

I get ya. Thanks. Full disclosure: A second ago when comparing their stats and flipping back and forth between the two pages i confused Durant's career rebounding average (6.7) with his 12-13 average (8.4) and thought the rebounding numbers were a whole lot closer than they are. my bad.
