Official Jon Gruden Thread XI

Once the whole thing goes down it will be interesting to look back on it.

The misdirection is all coming from message boards. Believe it if you want or not.

I think the right answer might be the most simple explanation, and that would be this...

There never was any lock on Gruden. In fact the coaching search just started when Dooley was fired.

I'm not saying there wasnt back-channeling between boosters and Gruden, I'm simply saying Gruden was not a legitimate candidate until Hart began his official search.

Once the official search began, Gruden is/was on the list, but is/was in no way a lock. He's simply on the list, assuming he is in fact still on the list.

I think this whole thing could play out just like the AD is indicating. We could easily end up with a HC not named Gruden. I think you'll see that the "smokescreens" and "misdirection" are all not really there. Reality is often much more mundane than fantasy.

Again, just my opinion and I'll be interested in reviewing everything when the announcement is made.

Misdirection is coming from knox radio. They imply everything, say nothing. Message boards (at least about most of what I've read on this thread) have been surprisingly consistent and self policing. You get something wrong, about 20 people are calling you on it in about 5 minutes. There is little intention to misdirect on this board, its about gathering the collective information and distributing it as fast as possible to Volfans. 120,000 posts and counting...

Dilfer comments are being blown out of context. He does pre-game, post, and half time. He could have also been referring to Dilfer talking about the game.

He thinks Google automatically creates web pages for every spoken word and signed document within 5 minutes of it happening. Technology is so amazin!

You funny.......and yes, generally with something like this, it has been twittered or facebooked or emailed or phone called within 5 minutes of it happening. I fully believe that if Gruden's agent had signed something definite, that it would be on the street through a better source than any of our resident insiders.

Also, what I was asking him about, is did he have any links to where Gruden said personally that he wants to be at UT? The answer is obviously a resounding NO. He only has his opine and all of the VN insiders telling him what he wants to hear. Go drink some more Groolaide. Hopefully he will be here, doubtful if he is.

I really want to believe all the true believers in here. However, when they attack media members who have an opinion contrary to theirs, while praising that sportsshmorts blog, I have a hard time taking the whole thing serious.

They (we) ,attack media members that flip flop every other day. Basilio saying ill be shocked either way? come on, thats crap

Let me preface this by saying I want Jon Gruden as the next Tennessee coach. But I do think we need to do two things, or we are setting ourselves up for disappointment.

First off we need to of course look at other coaches in case this falls through, because coaching deals can and do fall through.

Second, we need to address how Gruden would do at UT.

Let's address the second thing first.

I think Gruden is a great football coach, obviously very smart. I almost think he's too complex to coach college. He's known for not being patient with young QBs. He went through a ton of qbs in the NFL. He wasn't known for developing qbs in the NFL. If he can be patient and work with young qbs and develop them into great qbs then I think it'll work. I think this is the biggest concern with Gruden, and I think it's a BIG concern. But everyone has concerns and I still want Gruden. I just worry about someone that hasn't coached much in the college game, hasn't covered the game. It's a concern.

Second let's look at possible coaches. I think you can throw a few of these names out

David Shaw- He's where he wants to be, no chance.

Mike Gundy- I'd love him, but he's from Oklahoma, he went to OSU, he coached there before he became a HC there. He's not going anywhere.

Jim Mora JR- He's from LA, his dad spent a year at UCLA when he was a child. All but two of his jobs have been west coast jobs. He's not going anywhere and if he does it'll be as a HC in the NFL.

LONGSHOT

Bob Stoops. I'm not sure what the connection between him and Hart is but whatever it is I seriously doubt this will happen. He's still in a good spot. Just because he's frustrated with fans doesn't mean he is going to leave. I'd say he's more of a longshot then Gruden.

realistic

Jimbo Fisher- I doubt he leaves. He's in a position to compete for a title if he can go undefeated in the weak ACC. I'm not sure about his coaching abilities or his recruiting abilities. I hear how he's a great recruiter, but he's in Florida so I tend to take that with a grain of salt.

Butch Davis- This guy can win and recruit. He recruited some amazing talent at UNC, not a school known for it's football talent. I think we could do much much much worse then him at UT. My only concern is his age. It sounds like he's going to be cleared of any NCAA violations so that's a plus

Gary Patterson. I'm not totally sold on this guy. HE was in a weaker conference racking up those wins. I wouldn't hate the hire, but I wouldn't be jumping up and down.

The following are guys I do NOT WANT AT ALL

Dan Mullen- seems stiff, good coach but just doesn't seem like he'd be a good fit. something about him I don't care for

Charlie Strong- OVERRATED. This guy was passed up by Florida TWICE to be a HC. If you can't beat Syracuse and UCONN then I want no part of this guy.

Al Golden- I know I said good things about him earlier, but I wasn't aware he might have had some dealings in some of the shady stuff going on at the U. He seems like a good coach but not the HR we need

P.S.

Anyone find it odd that Gruden and Dungy both still make their homes in Tampa....

Golden is not implicated in the ugly stuff at Miami. Anything that might have happened on his watch will be minor in scope.

Being from South Florida, I've recently read where he is having problems with recruiting. However, that would be understandable as their program is a massive train wreck at the present. The punishment to come from the NCAA is going to be harsh, and even without that hanging over the program, they have trouble drawing 40,000 to a game. None of which would give big-name recruits the warm & fuzzies.

I certainly don't subscribe to the opinions that say Gruden is the only one who will succeed at UT. There are a lot of openings out there, folks, and you can rest assured there will be some successful hires in the next few weeks that won't be named Gruden. The trouble is, we're going to need a couple of years of hindsight. Unfortunately, this will include the Gruden hire at UT if it indeed takes place.

Personally, I'll give the UT administration, Dave Hart and the big boys the opportunity and time to make the right decision. I think everyone will agree there is a lot riding on this...

If ut doesn't get gruden I want butch davis then ut would probably finally.get Shannon as defensive coordinator

I'm not sure if you're referring to me or not but when did I come in here attacking people? I was told to go hang myself because I didn't think he was coming. Real courteous.

Well thank you. I promise I'm with you on wanting him but I just think he'll go the NFL route. People here just love to attack if you have a different opinion.

You just described 50% of the people on this site. I've been attacked all morning just because I didn't think Gruden was coming.

So I get attacked because I have a different opinion. Are we allowed to have our own opinions or are we Communists now?

Hmmm. Sounds like you are 100% certain you have been attacked.

You really think it would be wasting that much money?

flying to coaches or flying them in? Paying people to set it all up, manage, coordinate? It's a couple grand just for gas. Pilots, staff, travel expenses.

Yeah, I think it's a waste of time and money if for show. They are too busy to do things for show, imo.

I meant Jimbo Fisher.
But Jeff Fisher - his son goes to Auburn and he is very tight with 2 of their main boosters. fyi.

Jeff Fisher isn't going to Auburn. He just isn't. Not now, not ever. I heard this rumor yesterday. Auburn fans are possibly more delusional than Arkansas fans.
