think about it.

Stoops - you think Gruden is expensive???
Golden - too many question marks. Miami is a mess, and hes gonna have to stick it out there.
Fisher - this is probably Auburns biggest target IMO
Strong - not proven enough for SEC
Mora - UCLA isnt going to let him leave. Sorry. This is the closest theyve had to winning in a while.
Gundy - find me an example of ANYTHING ON EARTH (living or inanimate) that was taken from T Boone Pickens that he really wanted to keep. Yeah.... Not gonna happen.
Patterson - Arkansas better pay up for this one.
Petersen - why would he leave? he is now their version of Paterno (pre scandal)
Mullen - No offense, but Tennessee stealing Miss St coaches. Thats Arkansas style stuff. I dont see it at TN.

If Fisher goes to college coaching, I think it will be to UT. He lives in Tennessee, he likes Tennessee and it would take less time to turn around UT than Auburn.

with all that said, I'm not sure he leaves the NFL.

Oh where Oh where are you tonight? Why did you leave me here all alone? I have searched the world over and thought I found true love but you met another and phhhhhhht you were gone.........

Gruden takes the Tennessee job when half the NFL and college teams would die to have him? It makes up 1000% towards what Kiffin did to us.

Wait...People have been talking about Fisher a lot lately...
I thought they meant Jimbo...

I will take that from you. A big difference than what you were saying three weeks ago.

not really man. I'm a lot of things, but I don't waffle. Maybe some, but not much, a little, but not a lot, if ever, do I waffle.

3 yrs ago I said no way it would ever happen. I haven't said that this time around.
My doubts have been that it was a done deal. That is all, and I have always thought there were a lot of hurdles. I didn't think we would clear the early ones, but we did.

So according to the media, "Gruden is on the side now". Could it be that UT is going through the motions of having a coaching search to make things look good?

I think they got mad that chattanooga radio is snoopin them out on a story and now they have to create drivel to keep things interesting...otherwise they look useless...

I firmly believe Gill was blown out a year too soon at Kansas. One more year might have bought him another one. Kansas saw Weiss as a recognizable name and knew they could get him so trashed the Gill plan after only 2 years.

and KU is probably regretting that decision about now.

I meant Jimbo Fisher.
But Jeff Fisher - his son goes to Auburn and he is very tight with 2 of their main boosters. fyi.

Jimbo, not Jeff. Jeff would go to USC.

I sure hope so, but that's a lot of $$ and time to waste for a cash strapped athletic dept that basically has had to get loans from boosters and the academic side to play ball

I think he is referring to Jimbo Fisher

Let me preface this by saying I want Jon Gruden as the next Tennessee coach. But I do think we need to do two things, or we are setting ourselves up for disappointment.

First off we need to of course look at other coaches in case this falls through, because coaching deals can and do fall through.

Second, we need to address how Gruden would do at UT.

Let's address the second thing first.

I think Gruden is a great football coach, obviously very smart. I almost think he's too complex to coach college. He's known for not being patient with young QBs. He went through a ton of qbs in the NFL. He wasn't known for developing qbs in the NFL. If he can be patient and work with young qbs and develop them into great qbs then I think it'll work. I think this is the biggest concern with Gruden, and I think it's a BIG concern. But everyone has concerns and I still want Gruden. I just worry about someone that hasn't coached much in the college game, hasn't covered the game. It's a concern.

Second let's look at possible coaches. I think you can throw a few of these names out

David Shaw- He's where he wants to be, no chance.

Mike Gundy- I'd love him, but he's from Oklahoma, he went to OSU, he coached there before he became a HC there. He's not going anywhere.

Jim Mora JR- He's from LA, his dad spent a year at UCLA when he was a child. All but two of his jobs have been west coast jobs. He's not going anywhere and if he does it'll be as a HC in the NFL.

LONGSHOT

Bob Stoops. I'm not sure what the connection between him and Hart is but whatever it is I seriously doubt this will happen. He's still in a good spot. Just because he's frustrated with fans doesn't mean he is going to leave. I'd say he's more of a longshot then Gruden.

realistic

Jimbo Fisher- I doubt he leaves. He's in a position to compete for a title if he can go undefeated in the weak ACC. I'm not sure about his coaching abilities or his recruiting abilities. I hear how he's a great recruiter, but he's in Florida so I tend to take that with a grain of salt.

Butch Davis- This guy can win and recruit. He recruited some amazing talent at UNC, not a school known for it's football talent. I think we could do much much much worse then him at UT. My only concern is his age. It sounds like he's going to be cleared of any NCAA violations so that's a plus

Gary Patterson. I'm not totally sold on this guy. HE was in a weaker conference racking up those wins. I wouldn't hate the hire, but I wouldn't be jumping up and down.

The following are guys I do NOT WANT AT ALL

Dan Mullen- seems stiff, good coach but just doesn't seem like he'd be a good fit. something about him I don't care for

Charlie Strong- OVERRATED. This guy was passed up by Florida TWICE to be a HC. If you can't beat Syracuse and UCONN then I want no part of this guy.

Al Golden- I know I said good things about him earlier, but I wasn't aware he might have had some dealings in some of the shady stuff going on at the U. He seems like a good coach but not the HR we need

P.S.

Anyone find it odd that Gruden and Dungy both still make their homes in Tampa....

I'm still cautiously optimistic that Gruden is the hire. I have no doubt that Gruden is the primary target. You don't go through the effort of freeing up $18 mil over 3 years and not aim for the stars. But, sometimes money isn't the issue and I don't think money (or lack thereof) would be responsible for Gruden not taking the job.

Presently, still no official statement from the AD in regards to the search, how it's progressing, etc. which to me means the search is "ongoing" at minimum. Still no official statement from the Gruden camp, confirming or denying any interest in returning to the sidelines anywhere, much less to UT specifically. And ESPN has been virtually silent on the issue, so take that how you will.

While many through the thread say "Soon", I'm sticking with "It ain't over 'til it's over".

If we get turned down by the best out there (IMO, Gruden, Stoops, Patterson, and Peterson) and we have to go all the way down to Golden, I will not be pleased but I will still support my Vols.

If this happens my son will be driving himself to the games by the time we contend for a championship again. He will be 8 in January.

I really want to believe all the true believers in here. However, when they attack media members who have an opinion contrary to theirs, while praising that sportsshmorts blog, I have a hard time taking the whole thing serious.

There is some attacking of sports media members but from what I've seen, they open themselves up to it by flip floping every day. Even Hubbs has been saying Gruden isn't coming but he always ends with something like " it could happen".
