Well, if a random guy wearing a vol shirt says it.....

It is pathetic, sad and embarrassing. Maybe he comes here, maybe he doesn't but one thing is for sure: by loudly proclaiming him the savior of UT football before he is even hired, we are shooting ourselves in the foot.

Of all the negatives any coach sees about the UT job, the biggest would be NOT BEING JOHN GRUDEN and that is not something that can be overcome quickly and easily. Whoever takes the job - and I think there is no way JG would come here - will always feel like the second choice. And any time the Vols lose, fans will point to the coach and proclaim, "John Gruden would have won it!"

And this is not just a problem for non-John Gruden coaches. John Gruden himself would be wise to consider that even he would have difficulty living up to the myth that has been created here. He must know that a four-loss season in his first year would turn the fans against him, they would point and yell and claim that he is an imposter, not the REAL JOHN GRUDEN.

Not only are all of you setting yourselves up for heartbreak, not only are you embarrassing Volnation, you are HURTING THE SEARCH. The available coaches out there know the UT fanbase has its heart set on JG. As someone else posted, the Gruden hunt is the top trending topic on Yahoo this week.

If you really want to attract the great coaches to UT, make them see that WE WILL WELCOME WHOEVER COMES. After all, the coach knows that the love of the fans is as rewarding as the paycheck. If we continue to show that any non-Gruden hire would be heartbreak, would be failure, who would want to come here? Not even John Gruden.

Like I've said before, I think many fans will be satisfied with a HC that has 1.) A winning record in college ball & 2.)doesn't require the Googles to find out who he is.

I think you are right, many Vol fans will be happy/satisfied with that. However, I think a large and very vocal minority will remain highly critical of any coach who is not JG.

He's dumb. Keep walking.

We need another up and comer like Dooley I suppose. Would you welcome another Dooley? Find another place to wring your hands, this is the optimistic thread.

Yeah, cause most good football coaches have self-confidence issues and need constant reassuring that they are just as good as anyone else and that they can be successful.

We tried the no name hire, we want a name. The best name out there is Gruden. If that falls through, its not the end of the world, we will get another name coach and we move on. But until it does, we want Gruden.

If we scare away excellent coaches by anointing Gruden before he is hired, then perhaps our only options will be the hungry "up-and-comers" who are given the opportunity because so many others said no thanks. I would support whoever is hired until they give me reason to withdraw that support, as Dooley did.

In the end, we have to place our faith in Hart and hope he makes the right decision. He and his team are the only ones who will make it. Obviously, Hamilton got it wrong. That is always a risk. UT is not be the only great team to have hired the wrong person. And I am sure we will make other poor hiring decisions in the future.

When did Dooley lose your support? You were saluting him after he ran our program to lows never experienced in our history.

Hart did not make the hire, he will however get credit for the hire.
