Unless some serious changes happen (not just to the coaching staff) UT has about a %10 chance of winning at Oregon.

I don't deny that. We don't have the speed in our back 7-8 to run with their spread. But we can't claim to be this tradition-rich SEC school and expect big time coaches and players to want to come play here but we buy our way out of every tough game on our schedule. Make us look weak. I was against buying out UNC also. JMO.

I'm trying not to get caught up in the Gruden hype b/c I can't see it happening. The names I keep seeing mentioned by people who are usually credible are Golden, Fisher, Tubberville, Smart, Strong, Patterson, & Cutcliffe. So I'm looking for the next HC to be someone on that list. IF I had to choose one of those that I'd prefer it would be one of Tubberville, Strong, or Patterson.

I would agree with you that I dan't see Gruden happening.

Of your list, Strong and Patterson are the only 2 I'd really be happy with. Fisher and Smart are overrated, Tubberville and Cutcliffe are solid coaches, but neither one is the answer here. Golden is okay, but not a guy I would really want us to go after.

I'm really starting to get concerned that we are about to blow this hire. I am not high at all on most of the names I keep hiring from the more reliable insiders.

I also was against buying out NC. It comes down to the AD and what is worse for the perception of the program, getting spanked by Oregon or buying out the game.

Based on watching AU boards and news, there are a number of important, moving parts to these situations, including the University President, BOT, AD, former players, donors, and media. Many have their own interest and motives for their actions and often these interests are conflicting, even confrontational. Thus, what an insider may hear could be true or it could be misinformed/diversionary. I doubt the insiders on this board or any legitimate board are trying to deceive or misdirect. It simply is what they are getting for information.
I agree with the bold. I'm sure the majority of "insiders" are really trying to provide accurate information.

And BTW, Oregon will run us of the field next year. It will be very ugly. We have no speed on defense.

Gruden is not happening and you can tell by the supposed insiders starting to hedge and leave outs in their statements more and more so they don't look like total fools.

What if we run the ball 35 times for 200+ yards, control TOP, get some turnovers and play zone to keep them from scoring so fast every series? Plus they may not have Chip Kelly, who I think is a brilliant college coach. Fact is, we don't know who will be coaching our team but I do know we will have maybe the best OL in the nation and bodies all over the place on D. Question is, can those bodies tackle those little speedsters? I always find a way to think the Vols will win every game we play... But I'm wrong a lot. :).

Oh well, we have 2 (hopefully 3) more games this year... There will be plenty of time to worry about those quackers next spring and summer.

These are the "serious changes" I was talking about. Oregon possibly having a coaching change. What is our OL, WR, and QB situation. Who are UT's coaches. What is the defense going to look like. Will there be a talent upgrade and can this 2013 recruiting class be pulled together because right now it isn't good.

If the 9 game conference schedule talks heat up again this off season & it ends up happening UT may not have a choice but to cancel the Oregon game.

If all this conference expansion & realignment continues and the SEC adds two more a 9 game schedule would be likely. I also think I remember something about if/when the SEC TV network launches it would have an impact on going to the 9 game schedule.

We'd be better off drawing an extra SEC game regardless of who it is than to go to Eugene. Just not sure how likely any of that is though.

Even if Kelly laves for the NFL, there are several coaches on staff that will more than likely stay. TIFWIW but I've read that the OC may be the next head coach. They'll just continue on without too much of a hiccup and probably take our asses behind the wood shed.

the only way to beat Oregon is to dominate them upfront on defense.

and next year, is there any reason to think we will have a dominant front ?

I think our front line can be dominate. Depends on Saulsberry, Taylor, and O'brien IMO.

Nah........ maybe McCullers and Omari Phillips with Jordan Williams(impact guys best situation). Then those three you named Corey Miller and Jason Carr. Thing is this last dumb coaching staff didn't play the young guys so they'll have no experience. Just dumb if you ask me. Have to build depth and get these guys experience if they are good enough.
