The good, proven coaches are unlikely to leave a good, successful program to come to UT. Why would they? So you're going to be disappointed with who you can get if you take that approach IMO.

I'm not against and up and coming HC option myself because they have been a HC. I don't expect the Big name HR hire, I want a good solid football coach. If Smart turns out to be the guy and is great I'll be happy about it and if not then we will suck for 3-4 more years. Either way I have low expectations for next season.

What do people have against Smart other than the fact that he coaches at Alabama? And before people list Dooley/Sunseri as a reason that Smart would not be a good head coach, that's ridiculous. Smart has been Saban's DC for the last 5 years. Sunseri was nothing more than a life-long position coach and Dooley was nothing more than a TE/ST coach and recruiting coordinator, which really only is for organizational purposes.

Smart is not the guy in charge of the Bama defense. Sure you can say that he's been in the mix during the tough games but there is no doubt that Saban is making all of the most critical calls. Smart's main role for the Bama staff is to recruit the state of Georgia. He's a great recruiter and has plenty of connections is this state.

As a UGA fan, what are your thoughts on Smart? Would you want him to replace Richt?

For the record, I'm not advocating for Smart, I'm just trying to understand why people are so against him. It seems that people decide they don't like him, then attempt to find a reason to back it up.

No, not really. The guy would instantly divide the fanbase. I think he needs to prove himself first for a couple of years at a mid-level school. But, he is obviously holding out for an elite SEC job.

Agreed. I'm not sure there is a proven, championship HC from the Saban tree. I may be wrong.

I just don't think it is worth the chance for most programs to go the Saban tree route again.

That's not true. I know for a fact smart calls the checks and audibles. Saban gives smart a lot if freedom

I can't see any reason Strong would turn us down, and I think he's the best available option (Gruden is a pipe dream IMO). Can someone give reasons I might be wrong?

Nah...just trying to understand the intense opposition to him. Personally, I don't want him to be the guy, and I don't think we'll have to worry about it. It's just an interesting discussion IMO.

One of my personal favorites doesn't have any HC experience either but he's been looked at for NFL HC jobs and that's Greg Roman. I love the 49ers offense wish they would throw the ball a bit more they have to many weapons on the outside.

Mark Dantonio, Todd Grantham, Jimbo Fisher, Mike Haywood, and Will Muschamp come from the Saban coaching tree. Obviously they don't qualify as proven championship HCs (and Grantham has not yet been a HC), but it's not a bad list.

ive said it before but i dont want anyone on Sabans defensive staff not named saban - he is pulling the strings, i dont want the puppets

I didnt mention recruiting - i don't think you are going to argue that his defense is good or that he has beaten any good teams since he has been there - b/c neither of those are close to true

now let's talk about recruiting - he was a coord at florida in great years, not sure that really is a measure for recruiting - he now has the 72nd ranked class in the country, last year he had the 42nd, in 2011 it was 29th, 48th in 2010

recruiting doesnt look that great once you bring out the actual facts huh?

If you weren't talking about recruiting than I have no idea why you were quoting my post that is talking about recruiting. Has his defense struggled? Yes, but he has also only had two full recruiting classes since the disaster that was Steve Kragthorpe and you can't turn chicken sh!t into chicken soup. He has brought in some good players to that defense though these past two years which only an idiot could deny. It is also kind of hard to beat any good teams when you don't have the opportunity to beat good teams. As far as recruiting goes, he has averaged 35.5 in his two full recruiting classes at Louisville. I'm never count the first recruiting class with any coach as he is likely hired in a December or January and only has a month or two to put his mark on the class making it not a fair assessment on his recruiting ability. Also, this recruiting class is not over yet and is not a fair assessment as he has plenty of slots left to fill and move up. In his two complete recruiting classes though, he has finished top in his conference once and second in his conference the other time behind rugters who always pulls good classes due to a strong instate talent base. Can't expect a coach to do much better when he is recruiting to the big east, in a state that does not have that much talent, to one of the most unimpressive campuses that I have stepped foot on. Everywhere he has been though whether it has been Notre Dame, South Carolina, or Florida he has recruited players that he has then put into the NFL.

Who would you consider a "proven, championship HC?"

muschamp was a successful DC outside of Saban - Jimbo was an OC so different as he would have more control in a Saban environment - Haywood was an offensive guy under Saban as well

Butch Davis is the best talent evaluator I've seen. Would love him at UT. PR wouldn't be fun though.

I don't think the PR hit would be bad. He's also familiar with Pittman and would likely bring in Shoop (who I'm a big fan of). I would actually really like the hire the more that I think about it.

The majority of fans want a new coaching hire to be someone who has head coaching experience. We can not afford to go through the learning process with another head coach. A Smart hire would further divide the fan base. This is an opportune time to unite an extremely fractured fan base.

you said he was a better recruiter and has rebuilt the program - i am disagreeing that it is clear he has done either of these things

if that team were in the SEC or pac 12 or big 12 they are at least a 5 loss team so i think he has benefitted from a big east that is down even on big east terms and is a joke of a bcs conference and really hasnt done much of anything

imo he is a terrible game manager - the fact that he has never beaten a team of any consequence is not an arguable point

and to act like a HC has no control over scheduling an ooc opponent is ludicrous

He gets NFL talent. He's a coach that can beat Saban with talent due to evaluation and recruiting.

He's quickly moving up my list. What are your thoughts on Taggart? I love the Harbaugh coaching tree, and Taggart played and coached under Harbaugh Sr. for a long time. Also coached under Jim for a few years at Stanford.
