Official Jon Gruden Thread V

With all the talk about what a mess the AD and the rest of the administration is in, it sounds like not getting Gruden may be the least of our problems.

Agreed. I wonder if any decent coach will want part in this. Heck Strong probably won't. They were saying a week ago they wanted to extend his contract, and up his pay exponentially. This is the worst I have ever felt about Vol football. So much so, that I wouldn't mind Petrino here, and I think he is a scum bag.

I get that.

But where was the issue when an offer was supposedly made by the boosters to Gruden with the blessing of the AD?

FTR I just want Dooley gone. Gruden would be great but I've been let down too many times to get overly excited at this point.

i could be wrong VG, but i dont think it has ever been said that an offer has been made with any AD involvement. the whole thing seems to be Haslem's deal that he is trying to power push into the university.

The big money guys have the power to fix this mess, this week when the BOT's meet. But do they really want to fix it? Consider the following. Who had to sign off on the Fulmer firing, and Kiffin / Dooley hires before they became official? The big money people (Haslems above all others). Anyone who has followed UT FB for any length of time, knows the big money people (again the Haslems above all others), have the final say on everything FB related. Seems to me, disgruntled fans should demand that they be the ones to fix the mess they have created. That being said, do they really have a desire to right the ship? Has anyone even remotely considered this? TN just may not be the priority it once was for the Haslem family. Yes, TN is still the local college team, but has everyone forgotten that Mr. Haslem shelled out 1 billion (yes i said BILLION, with a B) dollars to purchase an NFL team recently. If you were he, would your priority be on the local collage team still, or on a business investment, where you just dolled out a BILLION dollars. I can't speak for the Haslem family, but I damn sure know where my focus / loyalties would lie. I just find it mind boggling, that in all these post from Gruden 1 to now, I have not seen this mentioned even once. Seems like common sense to me.

so we may not get Gruden, but hopefully we get the university in line, to stop getting coaches on the cheap, and spend more money to hire a solid name coach that can still lead us to prominence. im all for that IF it happens before spring practice 2013.

I don't see them expending the effort to do one without the other. That is just me.

The only thing that can fix this mess at this point is to separate the AD from the rest of the university like UGA or UF. The AD would be its own separate nonprofit organization or some structure that is totally separate from the university. The AD advisory board would become a board of directors so to speak. The President of the University would ultimately serve as the Executive Director or Board Chair with the AD running things day to day.

This would undo the mess made several years ago when they let Crabtree go but then took his advice and put the AD under the Knoxville Campus (Cheek). It's not as simple as firing Cheek. You can't fire the Chancellor of the university for not hiring the right football coach when that's not what he was hired to do in the first place - that makes the entire university look stupid and creates just as much division within the ranks because more people at the university care about academics more than they do football.

You can fire Cheek all day long, but who replaces him? If you want to get someone worth a darn for the university then they are more than likely going to take the same stance as Cheek. If you hire someone to be Chancellor that is just to cater to the AD, then what message are you sending your faculty and students?

It's a complicated issue and the answer is to separate the AD from the university itself undoing the mistake made a few years ago. Like I said earlier, I want to see UT win championships, but no one with any sense is going to put football over the university as a whole. My two degrees from that place mean a heck of a lot more in my life than wins on the gridiron, even as much as my mood depends on wins. Anyone who takes the opposite approach is in part responsible for the reputation this state has around the country regarding education.

many on here seem to believe that the boosters went and made contact with Gruden and they never thought Cheek would stand in the way to the magnitude he has. When they made the offer, had an agreement in principle, Cheek stepped up and said "no way." So now the boosters have been ready for awhile to fire Cheek and now they have a meeting this week to maybe do just that.

Ah! Gotcha. Makes more sense. Thanks.

Actually this has been discussed at some point.... The consensus was that most people who have that amount of money will buy an NFL team as a sort of "toy". He may not be expecting o make a ton of money, but when you have that much cash you gotta think of outside-the-box ways to entertain yourself! Not that I agree with this, just passing it along

Thats not what we are saying.... What we are saying, is that we want a chancellor that will hire Gruden. Thats all.

How many times do people have to be told that Jr. is the power player at UTAD. JH III bought the Browns. It's two different billionaires who each have thier own money. My understanding is that Jr. was pretty much out of the loop on the Dooley hiring as he'd decided to step back and let some other folks hold the rope as he enjoys his golden years. Lately, it's been said that Jr. has resumed more of an active interest.

My point is it's not as simple as having a Chancellor that will hire Gruden. You have to change the structure. I'm sure Cheek would give in and hire Gruden no problem. Will he undo 3 years of work and his academic beliefs to cave in to Gruden's demands every time he needs a favor, whether it be relaxing a policy for admission or discipline to keep someone eligible? Doubtful. Gruden or any other big name coach won't want the job unless he has total control.

That is in line with everything I've heard.

We are chasing GA and Fla academically. I support the higher standards. Their models seem to be working pretty well. I think that is probably the most telling part of your first post. If it is working for them it can work for us.

Would the UTAD be able to build up $200M in debt with only $2M in reserves if it wasn't a part of the university? I imagine having the backing of a university with $1B in reserves is why the UTAD is able to finance such large construction projects. You can't take out one half without being able to stand on your own.
