Why is all this academic trouble erupting now and not in 2008 when the Kiffin hire was made. It didn't seem to cause a problem for Kiffin and his band of thugs to get enrolled. Iirc we were in the line for a few big name coaches that year without much issue.

Cheek was hired in Feb 09 I believe. Didnt have enough time efff it up YET

This thing doesn't completely pass the smell test to me. An AD standing up and telling billionaire boosters no to anything just doesn't sound right. Smoke screen it could be.

This.

It just seems so odd after all of this buildup that NOW something this major pops up. If Cheek Or Hart was a roadblock you would think they would've been a roadblock from the beginning.

Maybe Hart is what all AD's end of being which is the arsehole out in front to take all the heat while money poeple do the moving behind the scenes.

we only know things as they get leaked out. we have no idea of specific time frame of anything happening in the AD.

With the last day or so and the fact that I have to winterize my boat tomorrow I am glad I have xanax on hand. I am not going to say anything negative about anyone who maintains hope or have different people with positive information but I am not one of them unfortunately.

Here is the way I see it B. For me....Jon Gruden represents a means to an end. The end is a once again healthy and thriving UT football program.

Now...as long as the AD is not receiving support on the academic side, that isn't going to happen. So we need to realize two things.

1. Even though there may be a wrench in the Gruden plan, Gruden is not the only coach in america that can help us get healthy again.

2. If this serves no other purpose than to get the academic side and the AD side to a healthy place, we will all eventually be winners.

That is the best I have right now.

So is what you saying Lex........fire cheek?

I get that.

But where was the issue when an offer was supposedly made by the boosters to Gruden with the blessing of the AD?

FTR I just want Dooley gone. Gruden would be great but I've been let down too many times to get overly excited at this point.

Very solid imo. I agree.

It seems to me that money, in the form of donations, is always made on the extremes. A winning program increases donations because people want to be associated with winners. Also, more people will donate when they have reached their limit of tolerance and are willing to contribute money to affect change.
If i were in a position to veto a decision and attaining donations were a part of my duties, i stonewall up to a certain point. The point at which i can extract the maximum amount of money from supporters who have reached a fever pitch and not jeopardize my job. Once accomplished, i relent my veto and get on board with the change everyone was clamoring for. Once we are winning, donations increase. If we lose, process begins again. If I'm fired, i have an impressive resume extolling my ability to fundraise.

so we may not get Gruden, but hopefully we get the university in line, to stop getting coaches on the cheap, and spend more money to hire a solid name coach that can still lead us to prominence. im all for that IF it happens before spring practice 2013.

Re: AD's office...

I'm no insider, I grew up with some of y'all in knoxville, bearden high school in the early 90s.
However, my dad worked for UT for several decades, still moves in some of those circles. He recently attended a luncheon with two players from the '51 championship team. These are respectful, older gentlemen not keen on gossiping too much, but one did share that, in his opinion, the AD dept was an utter, chaotic mess, with deeper problems than most of us know about.

Could be idle chitchat, or simply speculation, but it sounded ominous to me.

I really didn't think much about it, until reading this thread today and seeing a lot of similar statements thrown about.

There's a few of us Bearden grads from the 90's here in Ky and on VN, small world

many on here seem to believe that the boosters went and made contact with Gruden and they never thought Cheek would stand in the way to the magnitude he has. When they made the offer, had an agreement in principle, Cheek stepped up and said "no way." So now the boosters have been ready for awhile to fire Cheek and now they have a meeting this week to maybe do just that.
