Official Jon Gruden Thread IV

This....exactly like we discussed in this thread yesterday afternoon. And nobody who had good info ever said Monday was the day.....only a possibility, with caution for patience.

Also, on the question of Gruden's offensive scheme....he has spent the last few years attending clinics and meeting with coaches and coordinators around the country learning what works in college. That is not conjecture, but something he has spoken about. I believe he has had this move in his mind for sometime, and will unveil a system that has been developed for success at a high level in his new endeavor. It won't be a rehashed west coast/ Tampa offense.

Solid post. Fully agree. Jon has everything from contracts for ads with businesses to ESPN to future coaching clinics, etc. to work out. UT has the BOT and negotiations on said contracts to work out. Attorneys are paid by the hour. Need I say more?

Our dismay is over not knowing when. There is no "if". The income drop for keeping Dools is not sustainable because of a lack of cash reserves and rapidly dwindling fan support. Simply, it's not yet time to know when. Hart and the UTAD are doing it right this time. Hamilton's method was wrong, which is why he is no longer the AD.

For the trolls and negative - the comparative silence from both UT and Gruden on the issue is telling if you are paying attention. MNF goes away around the dead period in December. Don't think for a minute that Gruden won't play it up big as his swan song. He will have the staff that he can announce (not still under contract somewhere else) ready to go. The recruits he wants to retain and seek out will already be analyzed and targeted. In the last couple of months they will get it done at a higher level than Dools would ever be able get done.

And the Vol nation will explode with excitement. FWIW IMO.

Depends on how Hart handles things. If Hart's message is Dooley came in to play the role of rebuilding the team to a certain level and expresses gratitude for handling the NCAA investigation, installing the VFL program and rebuilding our reputation as a competitor with class, but now is time to take it to the next level, then I think it will be accepted by the public.

IMO, the potential backlash of handling it with that rationale would be the next logical question: "Then why did you sign him to a contract duration without the intent of honoring that contract duration? If he's done all you expected of him so far, then why terminate him?"

I almost feel as though the correct avenue would be to respond something like: "CDD has worked very hard, and we thank him for the work that he's done in correcting the direction of the program so far. However, we feel that the product on the field has not improved to the level that we expected. So, we are going in a new direction. CDD is an exceptional guy. We have every expectation that he will be a success in his future endeavors."

Got great news the minute I walked into work this morning from the kind of people you want to hear it from. Again, not my direct information but now a second person claims to have seen the MOU, and that it contains an "unprecedented" compensation package for the NCAA. Also was the second person that should know that confirmed the talks started getting serious when Denver played Atlanta in Atlanta on MNF and a certain booster and Johnny Majors flew down and met with Gruden.

They went on to say that just Monday there was a phone call between Dooley and a certain "mega booster" that got quite heated and resulted in Dooley hanging up the phone. Supposedly this is one of the things that cleared the way and got Cheeks fully on board.

Could be just another rumor but is in line with everything else I have heard. Also this guy has never said anything directly to me about it, but it came up in a private meeting this morning. This is one of the people I wanted to hear this from, because it is the least likely person I know to make up something like this. He stated it as a fact, and in our business relationship and the people he said it in front of it could be majorly detrimental if made up. He is 100% convinced Gruden is coming. I am 99%.

I had heard something happened to turn Cheeks.....didn't know what. This makes sense.

I don't know....but I've been told his interest was gauged at that time.

Thanks for the answer. With all that is now going on, it seems very coincidental that he was given an inside look at practice last spring. Kick the tires a bit.

If Dooley treated him the way he has some other Alum - he most certainly would.

Exactly. I will say when Dooley was hired I was impressed with his press conf and have thought for yrs he was a good guy. But it's coming out now how he really is. I mean you don't cross or piss off your bosses, higher ups and definitely don't treat the community and former players the way he has. No excuse at all for it.

I know nothing is final and he's has yet to even be hired, but how many years would you expect Gruden to be at Tennessee, minimum?

"Hey Johnny, all you gotta do is pick up the phone man. I can make it happen."

Publicly, I think that is spot on...unless Dooley gets too belligerent...in which case the private references could turn into bamboo, shower etiquette..and orange dogs.

He will need references regardless of when it happens. Those typically come from your most recent employer.

While I agree in the coaching profession it doesn't seem to be as crucial as the real world - look at Rich Rod and there are plenty of others too...

I don't entirely disagree, butRich Rod had a pretty solid body of work. Dooley doesn't.

Not what I said....again.

He has learned at clinics and with other coordinators and coaches what DOES work, and WHY it works in college. That is what he will bring to the table, along with the ability to coach his talent to perform it.

Don't expect some all-new concept, rather a concentrated mixture of very effective schemes.

I could see it being a hybrid pro-style with Oregon's flash card fast tempo style.

Surely he should see the potential in revenue alone with a Jon Gruden as HFC at UT! In and around the university and state.

Or could be as simple as, if he's not here, you're not either.

I vote for 2!

People are wayyyyyyyyyyy overestimating the amount of esteem Dooley has with his colleagues and staff.

Add to that - Majors is pretty black and white (not racist) on these issues. He has never been the wishy washy type and once he makes a call he sticks with it til the bitter end.

I've heard Gruden say the fast tempo style is actually hurting the game. Not to say he won't use it, but it would be interesting since he has kind of been a vocal critic of it.

My belief is he wants to be here for personal reasons, and may view this as his last coaching job. He is moving the family home.

I know the contract options are all lengthy, which is a good sign to me too.

Agreed but there are multitudes of coaches that you never thought you would hear from again the pop up at a mid major. Most of the Bama Mike's have at some point - or show up as a OC/DC at least.

It seems that he wants to coach again , just won't be at this level.

My hope is that Gruden becomes so enamored with Tennessee that he is here for a long, long time. Good to know about the contract options. Thanks Boro.
