When asked about his decision to burn his last timeout and if he thought Shaw was out of bounds he had this to say...
"Well I thought he was out of bounds but he wound it (the clock) so I don't have time to argue."
What?!? Kidding me, right?
If Dooley thought he was out of bounds why in the hell did he not challenge the call? He has the right to request a review of a play each half as long as he calls a timeout to do so. Since he called timeout and said he thought he was out of bounds why did he not challenge it?
Here is a guy who many think is coaching in a game that will decide his future at UT. We're down by three late with precious seconds ticking off the clock and it never crosses his mind to challenge the call that even he admitted thought was wrong.
Wow, really? If anyone else still thinks Dooley deserves another year I'm not sure what more proof you need to realize he's way in over his head here. This is Tennessee and poor game management like this is absolutely unacceptable.
I'm not saying that the outcome would've been different but it dang sure wouldn't have hurt to have that extra 40 seconds and that timeout. Instead our coach just shrugs his shoulders and says he didn't have time to argue.
Thanks for all your hard work trying to get this program back to where it belongs, Derek, but it's time you start packing your bags.
Edit- here's the link in case anyone is interested (4:10 mark)
Vols Coach Derek Dooley Post-South Carolina (10/27/12) - YouTube
Should not have burned that timeout, but I do see why he called it. I saw the ref wind his hand to signal he's in bounds. Then a couple seconds later, the ref signaled that he was out of bounds. If he was signaled in then we needed the timeout.
Every play gets reviewed in the booth
You sure about that? Shaw's knee hit a full yard short of the first down on 4th and 1 in the first half and should have been reviewed but wasn't. Dooley didn't challenge and the refs said nothing. A review would have clearly showed his knee down at the 10 1/2 but ball was marked on the 9. Instead of us getting the ball on downs USC scored a td two playes later. Maybe your right but if true it's pretty inconsistent. I guess the refs got every call right today then.
That's what they say, but it did appear that the replay official may have been taking a nap or two today
Can't challenge under two minutes. Booth only. Great rant though.
That play needed to be challenged. The line judge was right there an blew the call. Dooley would have won the challenge. It probably wouldn't have changed the outcome, but you have to do what IS in your power as hc, cause the things that aren't are bad enough.
First of all, he did the right thing by calling the timeout to stop the clock but then he screwed up by not requesting a review after the timeout.
And where did I say he should've argued instead of calling a timeout???
Also no matter what down it was we did lose 40 seconds because the clock would've stopped since he ran out of bounds.
Yes it did. With no timeouts at all, and on the 15-20yd line, we had to blindly chuck the ball downfield...thus the INT. With a timeout left, you have at least one more attempt to get in field goal range. We only needed to get to their 35, to have a decent shot.It didn't impact the outcome man.....let it go.
