John expressed his admiration for the accomplishment of Coach Dooley placing particular emphasis on the VFL program and his success in recruiting. Bob Lamonte, John's agent, was also in attendance and inquired of our long term commitment to John and Cindy.
In conclusion, John and Cindy both hope Coach Dooley succeeds in turning this program around. However, I left with the confidence the Grudens would welcome the challenge if Tennessee were to need them.

I could be wrong on this, but I would think anyone connected with the Athletic Dept. would have had a recent warning about leaking information out of the Department. People don't normally risk their livelihood just to spread internet rumors.

Ainge's perspective always makes me feel better in the morning. He just said:

"I remember when I was at NYJ, Gruden came in the locker room and could've cared less about the Jets...all he wanted to talk about was Tennessee football. Who they played next, talk about the game before, or a play I had been a part of. Gruden is a huge fan of Tennessee, he's a true fan. If Jon Gruden is to take a coaching job, I firmly believe it will w at Tennessee. The question is, will he take the job?"

He also went on to say, "this isn't the first time. People don't know that we were looking down a gun barrel at Jon Gruden as our coach the year we hired Lane Kiffin. We had him, he wanted to come here and Hamilton couldn't get it worked out for whatever reason. He wants to coach here. He loves UT...he is a true fan. But he has a good gig right now, so we'll see."

The money guys probably jointly agreed that if they were forking over the money for him, Gruden would need to bring in whatever staff it took to actually get the job done. No point emptying the bank for a top coach but second or third tier staff. If the money's coming do it right. A set staff would make a bigger splash in the media and with recruits as well as tamp down any other possible coaching changes out there that may come soon as well. No point in setting yourself up for being surpassed by another school in the event of their coaching changes as well - Arkansas, Auburn, Georgia, etc.

If SBV and the others are correct, are we and Gruden any better than Lauder, Auburn and Petrino?

We live in an instant gratification age, like it or not, and with the amount of anonymity afforded by such a forum as VN, there is no accountability to be had for those willing to share as long as they do not filet their friends. There is also no accountability for making things up, however for this to be a rouse it would be elaborate to the point of hilarity, not even possible imo.

This is the main reason I am holding out hope. If this is trolling, it will be of epic proportions by a lot of people.

Depends on if you can work out some type of buyout outside the $5 mil completely. Some coaches would like the chance to get to resign rather than a public firing. If thats the case then can negotiate a buyout cheaper say to 3.5-4 mil

It could have gone further than that. Specifics of money could have been discussed under the hypothetical understanding that if DD wasn't retained. Verbally JD could have agreed to what would be accepted. That's where this has to be if you believe SBV. Anything more than that isn't possible IMO.

Unless he agreed to stay on as an interim coach. Many coaches are fired and allowed to finish the season. See: Fulmer, Phillip.

I guess the guy met with the wrong Gruden. It is Jon Gruden we are interested in--not John Gruden.

No, your made up fantasy doesn't make me wrong.

IF somehow we beat South Carolina and then Fire Dooley on Monday I will ban myself for 2 weeks from Volnation and miss the Gruden celebration.

It just won't happen that way.

We beat SC they will wait until Dooley loses a game later in the year...if that happens.

If Dooley fate was really "decided" they wouldn't give him a chance to win this game this weekend.

Do you not see how your "theory" is wrong/flawed.
