I thought marlin looked really good last night, not as fast as neal but is more dangerous in open space and always seems to fall forward, it was Bama after all.

We have scored a combined 29 points against Bama the last 3 years. That combined point total would not be enough to beat Bama in any of those years, scary stuff.

Hart is not happy at all and i think its about to get ugly, i dont think any game the rest of the way will change anything. We needed to be competitive last night then have a good showing the rest of the way. Bama is the measuring stick of college football at the moment, Hart was over heard saying we're no closer now than 3 years ago. I hope he does it sooner rather than later so we can have a chance at a good recruiting class.

Boom! Swing for the fence, Hart!

skeeter - you hearing any info on possible replacements? Hearing anything on Gruden?

Quite a few folks on VN think he's in talks and will likely be announced the new coach in a couple weeks.

Hello, Skeeter??

So its on now huh? I had a feeling it couldn't keep going like this. There has to be some sort of improvement and there hasn't been. He has restored the roster some what but not showing up on the field.

Thread just got realz.

It has to be done sooner than later. If it happens after the season, you get kids applying for transfers left and right, and depending on the timing, the recruiting class could fall apart. Hire one soon, he can start recruiting again. There are a lot of recruits I don't want to lose.

I agree. In order to hold or improve the class it needs to be done asap. If the right hire, could improve a lot.

So if not Gruden, who's most likely? Personally, I would love Patterson from TCU. I'd be ok with Charlie Strong too. But there aren't too many names out there being tossed around that I'd be thrilled about

The thing is those coaches can't really be contacted can they? Until the end of the season? I could be wrong but most already coaching wouldn't consider it this early in season.

247 -

current vols coach derek dooley was asked after a 44-13 loss to the crimson tide whether he thought he had the support of athletic director dave hart and the ut administration going forward.

Dooley, now seven games into his third season in knoxville, replied with just one word — but a really confident word.

“yes,” dooley said.

I totally understand the situation we are in, but I'm glad I don't have to make the decision.

3 coaches in 5 years. Has a program ever been successful immediately after that? Hire a new coach, and we're not competing for the SEC East for another three years, most likely.

Where did the whole, "if Dooley doesn't get a win against Bama or USCjr, he's gone," notion start? I've looked around quite a bit, and it seems like a lot of message board crap. JMO. In this case, I think the only people that would truly know are skeeter and Hubbs.

I don't know. I think it depends what kind of base truly exists on that team (both mental and physical).

Also, I think it depends which coaches would be retained in any changes. Jay Graham, McKeefery, maybe Hinshaw and/or Pittman could be beneficial.

Its far from ideal, but I think the right coach has a much better foundation to work from than either Kiffin or Dooley did (solid o-line, decent skill guys, McCullers and a few pieces on D).

The potential new guy's ability to get the team to buy in would play a big part.

Ultimately, I'm like you. Its an awful decision to make.

If and I emphasize IF it happens... In order of importance I hope these assistants are kept :

1) graham
2) sal as a LB coach
3a) Pittman
3b) Hinshaw

One of main factors is recruiting. We need RBs LBs and OL. And badly. Need WRs too

We were 10 pts away from winning the East in year one under Kiffin. And that was with a roster that was vastly less talented than the projected 2013 roster.

Those were also the same players that played like dog **** under Fulmer in 2008.

If we get the right guy, I think we will all be very pleased with the 2013 season.

Kiffin deserves a lot of credit for what he did with Crompton. He played to his strengths and never forced him into bad decisions (unlike Chaney and Bray). However, UT had Hardesty, G. Jones, and D. Moore. That is nothing to be ashamed of. The OL wasn't bad like it was the next year. Moreover, you had Eric freaking Berry on D. Come on. Kiffin's last year cannot be compared to this current team. The defenses are two completely different animals. Monte Kiffin - 30+ years experience, Sal Suneri - .5 years experience (all at top levels).
