Any suggestion that Jay would leave the bengals is silly. He will get his HC shot soon enough.

Carolina will make a run at a new coach soon.

If UT goes "all in" on Gruden then yes I expect immediate, stellar performance. That is what you pay "top dollar" for. If the coffers have been emptied to pay him then top of the line performance is a requirement. If he is going to compete to win the SEC Championship then he better be able to put it on the field from day 1 because the alternative if he fails gets really ugly. See my earlier references to Watson Brown. Gruden will not hang around long if he were to see his "stock" on the decline. He can buy his own way out of a contract.
So basically what you're trolling...I mean saying...is that you prefer to have a (bottom third of the SEC salaries) Budget coach...with no prior credentials to even commend him to this job in the first place, work the fanbase with his....uh....PROCESS? Yes, that's the word I was looking for.

Cheap coach x 6yrs > High Salary coach x 1 yr

Yeah...you're not trolling. Making perfect sense....if you're an Obama campaign staffer. :loco:

OK, I'll lay out my problem with Gruden if you are interested, otherwise simply disregard. Gruden, while certainly having strong NFL credentials, is unproven at a college level and there is a huge difference in succeeding between them. If we were to hire him, and IF the rebuilding road were not to be as smooth as some suggest, then would he hang around to finish the job or jump ship back to the NFL before his "stock" or contract potential fell? I question if it would be a wise hire, given we would have to pay a record price to get him, with the risks I have mentioned. Usually no one on here wants to discuss anything remotely anti Gruden to UT++Victory 2013. When I see that kind of closed minded attitude it always throws up a flag and I usually step into the fray. No harm intended.

These are all hypotheticals and nobody can answer them because we don't know the future. Gruden doesn't seem like the type to take on a situation and bail on it though. He has proved it all in the NFL and I believe he wants a new challenge. You hear Alabama players speak about "they run things like the NFL , all business". That is what I expect Gruden would do if he decides to coach college ball. Saban expects these players to handle business. His players fear him. Gruden would get the same respect because he has done things the same way before and won it all at the level these players want to get to. Jon has not been doing nothing for the last few years. He has been studying football and the more you hear him speak , he is talking about the college game changing the NFL. I can tell you this , he doesn't want to get fired again (who would) and I believe he knows that is more likely to happen in the NFL. Sometimes you get one season. Saban was 2 years in with a losing record. Ever think he left to avoid being fired if he didn't get it done in year 3 at Miami? It can happen either way. I just don't see Jon jumping out of the frying pan into the fire that is the NFL , IF he decides to coach college ball. Remember I said IF. And the way he talks about the NFL now , it sounds like he wants no part of it. The new rules don't seem to go with his view of the sport at a professional level. He has said he wants to coach again and is "trying to figure out where he is going". Next best thing? The SEC. I know this doesn't answer the constant question of "how will he be a good college coach because he was in the NFL?" But I like his chances. This is not Jon Gruden in his 30's. He is older and wiser. Other coaches have done it. We can't act like it isn't possible. Pete Carroll went to USC at around the same age. He did just fine.

You won't like it.
Smart. You're right. I don't like it. Seriously, though. I would be fine with Patterson. I too prefer Strong now, over him, but Patterson is the coach I was hoping we'd go after when Kiffin left...in terms of one I thought we had a reasonable chance with.

I still believe that had Hamilton ponied up and offered him $3.5-4mill/yr, he would have been our new coach.

I seriously think Gruden could build the next SEC dynasty here, and be able to hit the ground running, with the talent on the roster.

The problem with Gru appears to be paying him and still having to pay the higher salary's of the coaches he would want to bring with.
That might be a legitimate point...but I haven't heard anyone complaining about coaching salaries in Bama's circles.

Pretty sure Gruden would know he doesn't have a blank check in that regard...but it really is like any other expenditure in life. You do pretty much get what you pay for. Just look at Dooley and where his salary falls among SEC coaches. Why should our fanbase EXPECT a coach whose salary is at the bottom of the SEC scale, to beat coaches making twice what he does.

Go budget shopping for a coach, chances are high, you're going to get a budget-level product.

Those points have been discussed ad nauseum. If he wanted an NFL job he could have one right now. Head coaching at college wouldn't be the transition people make it out to be. He has college experience so he knows the game and recruiting plus you hire assistants who hit the recruiting trail and have that experience. The HC acts in a closer role. Don't you think Gruden would be a hell of a closer?

Good morning Grudenites and you "Other" people....Please check your Dooley at the door because this is all about the greatness that is Chucky...Mr. AD Hart, Bring Gruden to UT and together we'll rule the SEC and take down the evil empires around us....Bring him here Mr. Hart and He'll make YOU famous.

Thought I would log my support for Gruden. Dooley might come good in future. I think his OJT at Tennessee will serve him very well in the ACC / Big East. For me, even if Dooley goes 9-3, if Gruden is interested, you make that change.

The first two Iron Maiden albums were fantastic. Paul Dianno, even with the Cockney twang, was a great lead metal singer. But if Bruce Dickinson is available, you still make that change, because it just makes the band better. You can trade David Lee Roth for Sammy Haggar, but you can't trade Sammy Haggar for Gary Cherone???

That would be like Tennessee hiring a guy who needed his Daddy to get the job or a run-of-the-mill WAC AD.

Joe Biden was laughing all night at Dool-Aid drinkers...or maybe it was something else. Same difference. :)

Hey Grudenites. I was thinking of another angle of hiring The Gru. ESPN wouldn't hate us anymore! It just keeps getting better.
