Mac vs PC (split)

$2199 is too pricey for this Apple fan. Especially considering it ditches an optical drive. While its not part of my everyday usage I like to have it when I need it. Part of me is kind of done with laptops anyway. I haven't turned mine on in months since getting an iPad.

The new MacBook Pro is a stellar machine. It is what it says it is...Pro.

Yeah its so pro - removing the Ethernet port and the disk drive is just plain idiotic and just another way to pillage your check book to make you purchase an external one of each.

Making a laptop smaller is idiotic - that's what tablets are for - so it was just plain stupid to remove those two things to make it slimmer.

That's why I said "Pro". It isn't for the avg. consumer. If you want to do nothing but surf the net, email, do some word processing, etc, then go out and get a $500 disposable computer. But if you have heavy lifting, like video/audio work, this is a great machine.

lol

Or you could just buy the other "Pro" for $1200.

As some one who works in the video post business, give me the processing and connections and keep the optical drive. Rarely use it.

I bought an Air in December and bought a SuperDrive to use. I have only used it maybe 5 times since then. And it's only been to import CDs and then burn CDs.

that's not why they took it out....

I believe they took it out for 2 reasons: make the laptop thinner (the biggest reason why laptops are thick) and then because I think Apple thinks optical drives are becoming extinct and unnecessary in today's world (and to sell their own SuperDrive to make more money of course).

Yeah - which has nothing to do with what the poster claimed.. but anyway its stupid.. mac's are thin as it is.. and if you want something more portable you buy an IPad so it doesn't make any sense.. it makes about as much sense as Steve Jobs not supporting flash. There are still several instances where people will want an optical drive and if they say otherwise they're just being stubborn or don't care to spend the extra money.. and unless you have a desktop to go along with a laptop - I'd also be pissed at not having an ethernet port.

I think the new Pro is unnecessary. The retina doesn't REALLY look that great. Great enough to justify that price tag at least. Make the Air the optical driveless laptop and keep the Pro with the essential ports/drive. People have the option to add SSDs to the standard Pros anyways.

The 17in Pro got discontinued by the way, which was a controversial decision IMO.

It's my understanding that the SSD and RAM will be soldered in? If so I'm not a fan of that, but that's just me.

I agree with you on the Retina display and the price tag. I like the Retina display a lot,and was hoping for the Thunderbolt display to get it if the price didn't go up too much, but WOW the pricing of the MB Pro Retina is just nuts, and if the SSD and RAM is in fact soldered in I will stick with my Mac Mini and TB display.

Umm..

Oops

What people don't understand, especially the Mac enthusiasts, is that in the PC world, once you hit a certain threshold of money spent, you get some impressive performance and support. If you gave me $1200 to spend on a laptop, I could blow away the performance of any Mac out there.

Well I think you could upgrade the SSD but the RAM is soldered to the board. At least with the 2011 MBAs. Maybe the 2012 Airs and New Pro have both soldered to the motherboard.

This is true. Most level-headed Mac guys concede that PCs are definitely the way to go for gaming because of how much you can do to it and for how little it costs. Those Mac Pros are like $3,000 which would cost half of that with equal performance in a custom built PC.

From cnet:

Macbook Air: The new MacBook Airs will be equipped with the latest Intel Ivy Bridge chips, offering up to Core i7 with Turbo Boost, bringing the processor speed up to 3.2GHz.

Hard drive options include a 512GB SSD, while graphics will be up to 60 percent faster. And USB 3.0 will also be part of the package.

I wonder what the 500+GB SSD will push the cost to...

There's no oops. I have an iPhone and it's a huge pain in the ass that it doesn't have it whether it not they are phasin it out because many websites use it currently.

You said it was stupid that they decided not to support flash. Adobe is going away from flash and not supporting it. It is a pig and is going away

One of the things that get me as a PC Tech, people who keep all their stuff on one hard drive. Electronics fail, and if you don't have a backup, your screwed. 512GB SSD or not, if you have that much info, you need to have it in several different places. I would go with a 120GB-180GB SSD drive, and have an external drive for data and backups, and an offsite backup for redundancy and safety of your data. The new Google drive looks to be a great option for that.

It is stupid - it doesn't matter if it's going away because it's still used quite a bit and will be continued to be used for awhile even after its phased out and many websites I use have flash so it's a big inconvenience.

I have flash on my iPhone. Downloaded Skyfire browser and it works great

I believe it's $500 more per increment. I was messing around yesterday making a custom New Pro and added the monster 756 gb SSD and it increased price $500.

They are worth it though. I couldn't imagine going back to a hdd after having an Air with SSD. It's super fast.
