Liberty Media is trying to boost their bottom line by growing a hybrid "grass". Said to be good for glaucoma when smoked. Unfortunate side effects include disoriented fielders.

Buster Olney ‏@Buster_ESPN
@JohnJCotter Two different types. Just as colleague Boog Sciambi noted, it's because they wanted the infield grass to play slower.

I don't understand how wanting the infield grass to play slower ends up with the embarrassing, awful divots that flew up when Heyward tried to change direction and fell down in right field tonight. I've been watching the Braves for 35 years and I've never seen shiat like that. Even when they were sharing a field with the Falcons.

I don't know either because Olney says that the outfield is the same.

Not a braves fan, but the bull**** with Freeman's eyes worries the crap out of me. Hoping that a solution is found.

Not to fear, he quit hitting two weeks before the eye problem manifested itself. It's an ordinary slump exacerbated by some weirdness in the middle.

I don't care what some ESPN guy that watches three games a year there says; it's not the same. Heyward tried to change direction and five divots flew out while he fell down. I've never seen anything like that since Schuerholz brought Ed Mangan to Atlanta 20 odd years ago. I have no idea what the hell's going on, but it's clear that it's affecting Heyward in RF.

@Buster_ESPN It's different grass--they changed it to slow down the infield, kept OF grass the same.

It was from Sciambi. But then again, you know all, you have seen 35 years of baseball. Nevermind these guys that actually talk to people with the Braves.

Gee, I guess you're right. They never resod the OF grass, ever, despite being in a brutal climate for grass to begin with. And nobody on the Braves would ever parrot a company line after the announcers spent five minutes speculating on national TV that the grass was a problem.

I stand by what I saw, and what I've seen over decades. Something is screwed up with the grass. I believe those divots way more than I believe Braves' PR.

Maybe they resodded it with the same kind of grass this offseason -- thus the claim that it's the "same" -- and it hasn't taken hold in any meaningful sense; it barely rained at all here this spring. All I know is that I haven't seen divots fly up like that the whole time they've been in Turner Field. Something is different.

Mi español es probablemente aun peor. I'm just going with what I've seen rather than what the Braves are telling people after what was pretty clearly a disastrous couple of minutes for the groundskeeping crew. You guys all watch a ton of Braves baseball; have any of you ever seen anything like that? Where a guy fell down and divots flew out from several places under his feet?

Now this makes sense.

Man I'm sure glad that Greg Walker is the greatest hitting coach of all time, and the savior of this team.

Oh wait

I imagine he's blaming McDowell for giving the entire team the flu and for coming up with a pitching staff that not even the '95 Indians offense could cover.

It was really nice to see Brian McCann, who has a disease that apparently modern medicine cannot cure, sitting right there in the dugout tonight next to the rest of the guys. Guess the flu isn't really the flu? But I sure don't want Brian to come back until he feels all the way better, you guys. Got to be careful with a guy as tender as that.

Being a catcher, he likes to receive not give.

Not having Chipper Jones, Brian McCann, or Freddie Freeman in the lineup will stifle an offense. Think about the productivity that is missing.

Hell, Jason Heyward hasn't "been in the lineup" for a month now either

This of true, but the way some posters on here and some media members were talking, Greg should have all the guys that are playing right now batting like Ted Williams.

I'm just saying people are too quick to throw around greatness when something is going well.

At least in September we knew we would be put out of our misery. We have several more months of this sh*t. I think we should trade Hansen for the sole purpose that he is not a hot weather pitcher.
