_Vols in NC...get out and vote!!! Need your help. MAY 8

All of these can be accomplished without marriage being involved. A civil union or some type of contract that is accepted by the government is all that is needed.

Unfortunately, this is not entirely accurate. Yes, civil unions and POAs can afford many of these rights/benefits. However, civil union recognition varies from state to state and are not universally recognized by the federal government. If the federal government would replace marriage as determiner of rights/benefits with civil unions I think all would be fine on that front (which is the most important thing to me, btw). Also, please note that the NC amendment also includes civil unions so they are effectively working to eliminate all options for equality.

This is one of the dumbest fights I've ever seen. Not sure why people are so anxious to risk splattering their heads all over the road. It doesn't take much effort to put on some head protection. I honestly don't want to be sitting bumper to bumper on I-40 because someone thought they were special then ended up scattering their grey matter all over the left lane.

they did away with the requirement in AZ because bikers were passing out from the heat and making it even more dangerous. Most I knew still wore one but would take it off in the peak of the summer

Has anyone seen/found an infallible argument supporting the bill in this thread yet?

We have BigPapaCat: probably wouldn't have voted, thinks homosexuality is a choice (sorry, knows it is), thinks God being all up in our laws is OK.

Marcusluvsvols: keeps claiming that God defined marriage as though A) he was there/interviewed god or B) marriage is actually defined in the Bible (spoiler alert: the secular institution of marriage is never actually defined in the Bible). All he has to go on is the destruction of Sodom/Gamorrah and a verse in Leviticus that forbids sticking your hoohoodilly in another man's dooperdoop.

Volfanjustin: accuses everyone on the side that is actually capable of thinking bigger than the Old Testament of being either liberal, or a "Pauly."

gsvol: probably thinks homosexuality and izloom are part of the same agenda. Did not even need to post.

Did I miss anything?

Haven't really thought of that. I'm not 100% familiar with the TN law, but the few arguments I've seen have been "I'm a grown man/woman, why do I need a helmet?". Was there any requirement on the kind of helmet you had to wear in AZ? If I rode, I know I would stay way cooler in an open faced helmet as opposed to a full one.

I do not want to be a person who bashes another for their beliefs, but I also feel that sometimes its good to step back and look at things from different points of view. A couple of friends posted thoughts after last night's results. I don't expect that many will necessarily agree, or feel this is relatable, but wanted to share.

- For anyone who thinks that marriage is a static thing (i.e. who would argue that it's just between a man and a woman, and that's the way it's always been, and the way it always should be), remember that it wasn't that long ago that you couldn't marry someone because they were white and you were black, or because you were Jewish and they were Christian. Religious beliefs are fine, and everyone is free to believe them. If your religion tells you that black people are inferior, fine. If your religion tells you that homosexuality is wrong, so be it. But be careful....before long you'll be the minority for whom the bigoted majority wants to restrict rights.

- The NC electorate who claim to be "protecting society" have to seriously ask themselves if they would have been the people who vehemently opposed immigration at the turn of the century, argued against votes for women in the teens, argued for "restricted areas" to protect against the Jews, feared a Catholic president, would have shouted down the Little Rock Nine, would have railed against inter-racial marriage, demanded that Ryan White be thrown out of town...I'd suggest they google some of those iconic images and ask themselves if they would have been the shouting, contorted faces in the crowd...after all those people thought they were "protecting society" too.

And what happened here? People banded together and changed the laws, why is that such a hard concept to grasp for some of you? Those who support gay marriage get off your duffs and do something about it besides bash the people of NC. That's the point of my aurgument, do something about it or move!

The thing that amazes me is i have seen numerous post saying the federal government has no right on marriage issues that it is a state issue. Now that another state has spoken, some of the same posters are going ballistic.
I personally think it is a fed issue simply because of the tax situation. Some do not want the feds involved in any issue unless the state does something they do not agree with. It appears to me some are being a tad hypocritical.

Where is marriage period in the constitution?

It's fundamental right.

The 14th Amendment protects the right to equal protection and reception of privileges under the law.

States can have laws that discriminate but they must meet a level of scrutiny based upon the classification. Suspect classes (race, national origin) receive strict scrutiny, gender based distinctions, etc. receive intermediate, all others must meet a highly deferential rational basis test.

Laws were not changed. Same sex marriage was already banned in NC by statue.

not that I knew of since I saw some ride without one completely. The ones that did wear one definitely just went with the smaller/no face guard ones

it will happen eventually. People had to be brought kicking and screaming into the ones mentioned above but now we view those limits as stupid. My son will probably say the same to me

Oh, I do not disagree with this at all. People often do not go out and vote if they feel the issue does not impact them directly. They may be in favor of gay marriage but since they are not gay and not directly impacted, they stay home. Definitely a big issue.

However, another point of view is why is the issue even on the table as it reaffirms/further restricts the rights of a specific group of people.

Being a resident of North Carolina, born and raised, I can say that freedom and civil rights were trampled on yesterday, no matter what you try to shroud it under. It was already illegal for same-sex couples to marry in North Carolina. Now, a marriage between a man and a woman is the only legally recognized union. No more domestic partnerships. No more civil unions. The opinions and beliefs of the many have been used to deny civil rights of the few. Popular vote should never be used to impose limitations on civil liberties.

Earlier this morning, there was a show on The History Channel about the KKK and the Civil Rights Movement. I would like to think that we've improved, evolved, and educated ourselves better as a society since those times.

After yesterday, it's obviously still a work in progress.

There is another point of view to consider also, legalizing gay marriage will infringe and restrict the rights of specific groups. For instance, say I'm a devout muslim and buisness owner, legalizing gay marriage would mean I would have to offer the same benefits as I offer my hetro employees even though it violates my religious beliefs.

Isn't that trampling on my rights?

How long before North Carolina votes on a state religion?

You've given me an excellent business venture idea! Living here in the mountains, I have unfettered access to rocks of various shapes and sizes, colors and textures, etc. Once the public stonings begin, I'll be sitting on a gold mine...selling rocks to the righteous masses.

How bout this, this is a piece of ****, freedom hating amendment passed by a bunch of piece of **** idiots that hate freedom and if you support it, well, I think you know where I am going with that.

And you know what, if you hate freedom, you can always go somewhere like Iran.

Muslims will soon be outlawed in NC too
