A Fair Expectation for Coach Dooley.

IMO Dooley will be a competent coach because he can recruit. As of right now, I don't see him as a national championship coach, but it is still young in his career. The fanbase will and should accept 8,9,10 win seasons, but if that is Dooley's ceiling, he will need to go.
The fanbase should not accept 8 win seasons.

I hope for 9 or more wins...

but I expect 7 with the bowl game in the air.

9 regular season wins would be an over achievement. Can't help but believe that the kicking game will cost us a win. 7 wins probably gets CDD another year but "fire him" crowd gets bigger and louder.

Accept 7 wins for the next three years? Zero chance fans, donors and boosters are gonna be okay with that! Neyland would be half-empty, donations would dry up and recruiting would suffer big-time. IMO, only 7 wins this year will cause major displeasure and have serious consequences.

I want every team on the schedule to wake up feeling beat down sore after their game with UT.

I want them to be exhausted and confused from having to chase UT down the field. Not to know where the next big play is going to come from. And hopeless because they just cannot stop UT.

I want the UT defense to fight for every inch. Totally crush the will of the opponents' ability to play by their aggressive demeanor.

In short, I want new Maxims to be invented by this team.

I want them to be the living embodiment of General Neyland's will to win and his Maxims!

I want "It's Football Time in Tennesse" to rock the nation.

I think that's fair.

Somebody cue the Pride of the Southland Band I can Hear RockyTop all the way in Louisville KY. With that said if that happens everygame IM GONNA SAY IT... WE GO 13-0 AND WIN THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP AND BEAT THAT WORTHLESS HUMAN BEING LANE KIFFIN

7 wins a year through 2014 becomes a lot more likely if Dooley is fired after 2012, IMO. We're not finished rebuilding yet. Firing the coach just increases the workload, likely extends the process by another year.

Agree with the other poster that if he can't win more than that, he should be removed, but firing him is not a quick fix for the W/L issues.

In the next 3 years they should. I said Dooley will need to go if that is his ceiling, but the next 3 years, fans should accept that number.

Im still trying to understand what you mean by - Dooley should be let go if his ceiling is (8 wins) but then right after that the next 3 years (which would be a 5 year tenure) the fans should accept 8 wins.

At this point, you could accept 8 wins this year and still not know if he is able. You would still be waiting for him to do something he has never done. He may eventually do it. I hope he does. But if he is not in double digit wins and competing for championships by that point, he never will. At least not here.

People need to understand that UT football is insignificant now. I drive though out the south and can tell you that UT decals and signage is almost totally gone over the last few years. It is like no one cares anymore.

The program needs a major infusion of excitement to get back to SEC football. I am really concerned how the other competitive SEC programs garnered some excellent recruits during the spring and we only committed one unknown. Even kids who were raised UT fans are taking a look and see attitude toward the program now. They know that this is not your father's UT.

This is not a glass half full or half empty proposition for Dave Hart but which direction is this program heading?

WTF are you talking about? We currently have five commits for this class, which is more than we usually have at this point. Vereen, Patrick, Sanders, and Carr were all big time recruits. Carr has an LSU offer and was about to pick up an Alabama offer but decided to visit here instead of going down to Bama that weekend. Bama remains very high on Patrick and are trying to get him to visit. Austin Sanders only offer is to Tennessee, but that is because he is refusing to talk to anybody. Bama and others have tried to contact him but he has politely told them that he is all Vol. Then Vereen turned down schools such as Clemson and Florida State. Our recruiting class is sitting in a very good position right now with those four anchoring it. We're also in a very good position with numerous big recruits, we just have to prove to them that we can win. It is dumb to worry about recruiting at this point. It is setting up win 8+ and we have a top 10 recruiting class this year and with all the talent that we currently lead for in the 2014 class (such as Jalen Tabor) that is setting up for a possible top five class. Yes, schools like UGA and Florida are ahead of us this year, but they have a larger instate base and the majority of there commits are instate. Hence why we are always behind them at this point. Also, the program needs wins, not an infusion of excitement winning is all that top recruits are waiting to see for us.

I think you are greatly overstating your point.

But I do think there is a lot of danger in letting your program fall into mediocrity long enough for people to get used to it.

I respectfully disagree. There are many coaches who can finish the rebuilding, if it comes to that. I don't think it would set us back unduly; in fact, if Dooley can't get it done, it will move us forward. It would be best for stability if Dooley stays on, but we have enough depth, talent and experience this year to see if coaching is part of the problem... or the solution. I look for Dooley to turn things around this year, and I think we'll have a better idea after the Florida game. JMO, of course.

Actually, looking at the roster a little more closely, you might be right. We do have a lot of guys coming back in 2013.

How our JRs develop this season is really the linchpin, in my opinion. That class was split between Kiffin and Dooley, and I know it has the big 3, but nobody else has really become a standout. This is about the time where guys like Jacques Smith and Raijon Neal should be coming into their own.

That doesn't fall on Dooley?

So two years of watching pathetic kicking it's still not on Dooley to fix it by year 3?

Ahem, year 2. Remember year 1 was really year zero making year 2 year 1; thus year 3 is year 2. It's complicated. I think Avagadro's number along with the atomic weight of cobalt was used to figure that one out.

I believe the kicking game, If not corrected this season, Will be what ultimately leads to Dooleys demise. We have the talent to keep it close in all of our ballgames... Opinions may vary. The entire special teams Unit should be one of the best in the country... Dooleys has had ample time to straighten it all out. Expect Excellence... Just dont hold your breath. Right Jay?
