See, I couldn't disagree more about Munson. He obviously brings a lot of passion and color to the game, and I can see why UGA fans love the guy so much. But he is (at least nowadays) just terrible at actually describing what's going on in the game. A standard Munson call goes something like "All right, Stafford drops back to pass. He throws it over the middle....and we got it! We're running downfield, and then they tackle us!" And that's it. You don't know who made the catch and tackle, or how far the play went for. He rarely tells you down and distance, and can go 10 full minutes without telling you what the score is. And forget about describing what formations teams are using, who's in motion, etc.
I've asked a bunch of UGA fans if he's always been like that, or if it's just since he got old, but they always just shake their heads like, well, what can you do? His color guy and team of spotters are obviously scrambling around behind him all the time, trying to cover for him, but still -- you can get in the car and turn on the UGA game, drive home, and by the time you get there, you still don't know what the score is or most of what's going on. I want to like the guy, really, but is knowing who caught a pass too much to ask?
Kind of goofy, but just fits college atheletics perfectly.
John Ward : Bear Bryant :: Bob Kesling : Ray Perkins
yes, I just compared John Ward to Bear Bryant. They both have a lot in common. They're both legends to their respective fan bases, and neither is coming back.
UT fans aren't in denial, we don't believe whoever we hire is going to become the reincarnation of Ward.
have you been reading this thread? It may not be denial per se, but you can tell that some think Ward should call UT games until he dies. There was no one who could have succeeded Ward that would have pleased the fans. I give Kesling a lot of credit for not even trying to be the second coming of Ward. I'm not always thrilled with his game calling, but like I said previously, Bob is far from the worst play by play announcer.
I don't know how the job was supposed to go to Mike Keith. Kesling has worked for the Vol Network in various ways since the 1970's, a more than a full decade before Keith arrived onto the UT Broadcasting scene. It makes more sense that Kesling got the job.

His play-by-play is exciting,
Can you imagine what Pearl's thinking during all of the pre-game and post-game interviews with Kesling? Not to mention the Bruce Pearl Show?Honestly, if you think that, then we will have to agree to disagree. That's like someone telling me in all seriousness that they believe the planet is 6,000 years old. At some point you're not agreeing on enough parameters to have a conversation. I don't mean that maliciously, it's just that we're apparently not listening to the same guy.
The one thing that can be said for him is that he allows Fulmer to shine on the weekly Phil Fulmer show. Only Kesling could out-bland even Fulmer's vanilla on-camera persona.
