Arnett to transfer?

There is a long-standing policy in place that UT applied to much bigger recruits than this kid.
We're letting him go to a D1 school close to home but we MUST apply the policy...if I get cancer, does that mean I don't get to pay my taxes because of that? The IRS may give me an extension to file it, but at the end of the day, I'll owe it no matter what.
Rules are rules.
Besides, I'm sure that when they sign their LOI they are told the conditions to leave if they so choose.

A contract is a contract...

UT allowing him out of this in any capacity is generous.

After reading Arnett's letter and coming across the following from last night when I was looking up the Arnett rumor, I think Dooley smells a rat in the whole sick father transfer request.

From an article on Arnett and how he committed to UT:

DeAnthony's father "never knew how to be a father," Ralph said, so Virginia relied on her sons to serve as de facto father figures for one another. Ralph looked up to Eric as a father and DeAnthony does the same with Ralph.

"He listens to me," Ralph said. "It's good to be able to give good advice and know that the kid is listening."

Ralph has served as DeAnthony's public relations agent of sorts, a role that, among other things, has allowed DeAnthony to keep the same cell phone number throughout his recruitment - a rare feat these days.

I don't know but that doesn't sound like a kid who is particularly close to his father. Now, dying does change things and DeAnthony may just want to give things another try but I think there's definitely more going on here than we're being told. DeAnthony could want to transfer for the sole reason that it will be hard if not impossible for him to ever get the attention he deserves playing with Hunter and Rogers. Who knows.

We know it , the coaches know it and I'm sorry to say it , but he is using this as an excuse to get out. I like Arnett , but it's so damn obvious. I've said it at least 3 times in this thread , Ralph is basically his dad. Just like the stuff you posted , it has been out there for awhile. He has talked about it and suddenly he matters because DeAnthony wants his way. If it did he wouldn't care where he went. All Dooley is doing is calling him on his bs. I am truly sorry that his father is ill. I hope he makes it , but it doesn't look good. I just question how much he would care if the situation was like he wanted at Tennessee. It has very little to do with his father (if any) and everything to do with getting his way.

Follow the policy. Lots of BCS schools there to pick from besides MeatChicken and MeatChicken State. We got Central MeatChicken. And there is Eastern MeatChicken. And I watched Western MeatCHicken play Purdue on Tuesday in the MeatChicken Bowl. They are very good. He should go to Western MeatChicken in my humble opinion. I also saw Toledo beat Air Force yesterday. Both are better than the Vols.

The letter hurt him a lot more than it helped him. How do kids with that bad of grammer & spelling ever qualify for a major college? Gee, that was embarrassing.

why is it a big deal that he has to pay for college for a year just because he is on the lower scale of income? There are millions who do it because it is a life investment. If he really wants to go to UM or MSU, then he should have to pay like everyone else. Not everyone in the world has money and athletic abilities, so why should he be treated differently?

Because the issue is clearly two-fold. He wants to be near his father AND play for a BCS school. Most releases are conditional, otherwise players would do this all the time.

Arnett wants free agency. Can you imagine the mess we would have if coaches and the NCAA allowed disgruntled players to transfer to wherever they wanted when they wanted?

Derek Dooley has agreed to do more for Arnett than he probably should.

That letter was Rhodes Scholar material compared to some of the papers I used to uh...er... proof for football players in my English I class in Knoxville.

Consider this as well.

If he wanted to pay his own way for a year at a state school where he is from.

Student loans would take care of ALL of it along with grants.

This is Arnett posturing. Arnett wasnt man enough to go to Dooley and tell him the real reasons he was transfering just like Brice Brown wouldnt tell him he wanted to leave.

If you are not going to nut up to your coach and tell him how it is, why the heck should he grant you a full release.

Very true. However, let it not go unnoticed that this type of BS keeps getting dropped squarely in Dooley's lap. At some point he needs to look in the mirror and ask why.

He does seem to get a lot more crap to deal with every week than a lot of coaches.

Wow! All I can say is...wow!

This country is going to pot in a hand basket

This is not Dooley's fault. He is doing the right thing. The onus falls on todays spoiled kids who demand instant gratification.

He thought Coach Baggett was his meal ticket to the NFL, and it might have been. Denarius Moore certainly came on strong under CCB. He was the last coach I wanted to see leave.
Now, he just has the QB coach (Hinshaw) slide over, whose resume highlight is a stint at Memphis. Add to that a humiliating end to a season, that started with a lot of promise. He most definitely is using this as his out.

Central Michigan or Toledo, it is. I hope things work out for him and his family, but this does smell fishy. Arnett thinks it's about him and his sick father. There may be some truth to that, but Dooley has to consider the other shipmates.

Start handing out releases like candy and wait to see how many others try to find someone sick in their family as a cop out.

i understand what i need to. We don't play either michigan or michigan state. they should not be ruled out. what other reasons would there be that would make it ok to release to central michigan but not michigan or michigan state.

Thanks for the moron statement. added a lot.

i know this is from like 10 pages ago but i think the deal is it sends a message to all student athletes that you cant just walk out on your commitment to play for a major university and walk right into another one helping their program and hurting ours. if it was that easy you would have 18-19 year olds just going where ever they think they would have the best chance to get drafted. if this kid has made up a bs excuse to leave ut then i dont wanna see him being a play maker at a top 25 school when he could have helped us. would you ant bray saying he has a sick family member in cali and he wants to transfer to usc to be close to them? how would that go over on here even though we dont play usc.

Didn't say this was Dooley's fault. He rarely handles any situation smartly, even if it's by the book though.

Exactly! Gunny has it correct. What would happen if after six months, a marine decided he wanted to join the Navy?

If my dad was dying, I wouldn't care if I was only released to play JUCO. I would be thankful to be free from a binding contract that could potentially keep me from being by his side. I think DA has been offered a very fair compromise, and his lack of acceptance alludes to ulterior motives. The situation with his father is unfortunate, but Coach Dooley has to stick to whatever parameters he has established regarding transfers, regardless of the situation. Its the same when a father has to punish his kid for something, even when it hurts the father more than the kid. Dooley and the University will have to absorb the PR hit, but sometimes a hard stance is needed to establish what kind of character the program will have. If Dooley is still the coach in a few years, this will be looked upon in retrospect as a program defining moment. I hope he doesn't do much to address the situation publicly, but my concern is with what DA is saying to his team mates. The perceived frailty of the locker room is a major concern.

there are special circumstances in certain cases. This is one where it should be granted. I dont see how it could end up being a bs excuse since it's been shown that is father is sick.

If a team is in the top 25 or not should have no bearing with the decision to release.

If bray's father became sick his only option would be fresno state since that's the only school within 3 hours. but i would have no problem with that. If bray was from Baton Rouge i would have no problem with him transferring to LSU.

If i played for UT and my father became ill I'd certainly want Georgia Tech, Auburn and UGA choices available to me.

that's why there is a controversy. The policy isn't black and white.

How'd you like to be DeAnthony's roomie right about now? I feel for him in some ways but he's pitching a fit over getting his way.

Yet when we encourage kids to transfer it's okay.

How is being honest with a kid about his future playing time, and suggesting he look elsewhere for a better opportunity even remotely the same thing? The kid ultimately decides whether to ride the pine, or look for a better opportunity. If he transfers, that's called a dissolution of a contract--both parties agree. A scholarship does not guarantee playing time.
