Note to Hamilton: Don't let Pearl get away!

He has and will. It's called money, and CBP will get more and more of it every year he stays. Monuments (court namings) last a very long time and should be reserved for someone that made a significant contribution over a LONG period of time. Two years doesn't even get a kid a degree. Two years does not make a program. Two years does not establish longevity. Looking forward to two more out of Pearl, and then two more. So on and so forth. After about 4 or 5 more of those two year stretches then I'll get into a debate as to what sort of monument the university should dedicate to the great CBP.

Excellent post. People, we need to sit back and realize that although we are very excited about what Pearl has done the last couple of years, it's not like he is the only one that can coach to a 75% winning percentage. If i'm not mistaken Billy the Kid has had the same winning percentage over his entire career at florida. I love bruce as much as anybody on here but we need to hold off on naming the university after the guy until he's been here a while. Greatness is made over a career and not a couple of seasons :peace2:

I believe pat summit at least deserves her name on a court, what she has done with our womens basketball program is phenominal, let alone what she has done for the university. Bruce pearl is a great coach, but i dont think he is too concerned about pat summits name being on the court. To say that bruce pearl should be looked at among the ranks of fulmer and summit is crazy,at least give him a few more years!

I agree... Pearl will be on the first thing hot leaving Knoxville if these jobs open up.

I understand the ties to Boston College, but there's no way he leaves Tennessee for that job. I lived in Boston for a while, and BC doesn't come anywhere close to supporting its athletics like Tennessee does. UT, regardless of its history, is a big-time job because we have big-time money, big-time facilities, big-time support and a commitment to excellence all throughout our athletic department. He's not leaving for a job like Boston College.

pearl hasn't even been here 2 full years i'm not worried about him going to another school. His style of basketball is not used in the nba so to me that is not a factor. no school will pay him more than ut and don't underestimate being able to be the king of his respective sport. There are few places left that don't have a shadow hanging over the coach and ut is one. he could and i think will be a legend here.

Why would CBP even consider leaving UT for AZ? The successor to Olsen is doomed to the same fate every other coach that follows a legend gets.

And for the record, the Zona Cats play on a court named after the current coach's late wife.

BTW, just finished watching UNC/GT game (it was still playing when I left the bar).

I see Bobby Cremins has his name on the court. What did he ever do to deserve that honor?

Lay off of Summitt.

Bruce pearl is a great coach, but i dont think he is too concerned about pat summits name being on the court.

Not only is he not concerned about it, he's embraced it. He's the one who started this whole thing by painting his chest for a women's basketball game, after all.

For a couple of decades, the men's basketball program at UT has been in an awkward position. Not only is football #1 in Knoxville, but while the men's team has largely sucked, the women's team has won six national championships playing on the same floor. When the men were [1] medicore to bad, the comparisons were inevitable. I was a freshman when Summitt won her second title in 89, and people were already joking that the women could beat the men's team. Ha ha ha, but still -- you know that's got to be pressure on the whole men's program.

Pearl's found a way to make it a positive. With a combination of savvy marketing and good old fashioned school spirit, he's taken the winning tradition Summitt has forged and associated himself and his team with it. Instead of it being "the women have won six titles, but the men have won jack," he's made it about the whole school. And you can't pay for the kind of great publicity he's gotten the university in the last few months.

A friend of mine is a Michigan State alumna, and barely even a sports fan; I got an e-mail out of the blue from her yesterday. She wouldn't know whether our men's team was great or awful, but she knows who Pat Summitt is. (Olympics? osmosis? I don't know how she knows who Summitt is. I wouldn't have thought she knows how many points a field goal counts.) But somehow she'd seen footage of Summitt singing "Rocky Top," and she said that the whole scene, with "all the orange and everybody going crazy....well, I don't really even care about Tennessee at all (sorry), but the whole thing still gave me goosebumps."

You think Pearl is great for UT? And you think he cares about playing on a court with a woman's name on it?

[1] I am so happy to be able to use the past tense

When Pearl creates a top 5 program for 10 years, then we'll revisit this topic. Summit has done it for 30, so asking for a third of the success shouldn't be asking for that much.

When Pearl tightens up and doesn't allow his child to be born until he gets back to Tennessee...THEN maybe a name change can be discussed.
