I understand and agree. This is the kind of thing that happens when your team is not winning SEC championships. On the other hand, Peyton is becoming to UT what Archie is to OM. Though some, including myself wonder how this is justified, it is happening nonetheless.
Peyton is viewed as a player that single handedly took the Vols program out of the mire and pushed it to the next level (even though he never won the big one). Peyton's impact on the program could be debated on several levels, but in all actuallity, he had nothing to do with UT's national title in 98.
Just as Archie is a diety in Oxford, and the state of Miss, Peyton is on his way to that status in Tenn. Yes he was raised with a silver spoon in his mouth. People on this board probably have little insight into the depths of Archies celebrity in Miss. That is a contentious point for people who wanted him to earn his spot in history, and for those who wish he had done a better job at that when he played at UT (myeslf included). His tendency to fold in big games has been documented, and Vol fans actually suffered through those times.
I guess the point is this. Peyton is now finally earning his spot in history, and some of the more overzealous Vol fans simply want to feel as though they have a part in it. Simply let them enjoy it as they so choose.
