Can you drive a car with a manual transmission?

Driving a manual was hampering my stop short move so I switched to automatic.

I'd rather not, but thanks for the advice.

unless all you do is pretend you're drag racing everywhere you go, your motor isn't going to be under any kind of load in regular daily driving

skipping 2nd and 4th gear and doing a 1, 3, 5 (assuming a 5 speed manual) shift isn't going to harm your engine in any way, not sure where you read about an engine's "fragility" but I believe you were misinformed.

My engine is a relatively high compression turbocharged 4 cylinder. A lot of owners have found that the engines seem to be hurt quite badly by getting into the boost while applying a significant load. I know my driving practices are a bit overkill, but there no harm done by using every gear. I have also found no noticeable changes with fuel consumption either.

I appreciate your concern as to whether I was misinformed, but I think I have this under control.:hi:

Real men drive 6-speeds. And an engine is absolutely under load going downhill with the foot off the accelerator, especially at higher RPMs while "engine braking."

A vacuum load is nowhere near as strenuous as a load at WOT, but the engine is designed to support a load with positive pressure. It isn't as well engineered for a negative pressure load.

I'm not implying that under normal operating conditions a negative load is going to be harmful to your engine. I'm merely stating that an engine is under load at 0% throttle, in gear.

although that comparison is most likely accurate, diesel fumes are good for the manhood

I also never said anything about coasting out of gear, just skip shifting when going through all the gears wasn't necessary

most of the time, they aren't necessary. At one time, Chevrolet, in order to comply with CAFE standards, forced Corvette owners to skip from 1st gear to 4th gear under normal acceleration. The transmission had some kind of lockout that didn't release unless the car was under hard acceleration.
