Save the Manuals! Official Headquarters ? Car and Driver

Like me, you may have noticed an alarming paucity of vehicles offering fully manual transmissions. Even sports-car stalwart Ferrari, of gated-shifter fame, isn’t providing a three-pedal option on the new 458 Italia. Equally distressing, I read in the Washington Post that our nation’s hard-texting youth have pronounced driving seriously lame, with only about 30 percent of 16-year-olds having acquired driving licenses as of 2008. I can’t help but think these things are related.

My first three cars were manuals. Driving around the UT campus is quite a challenge with a stick shift. You learn fast.

my company recently bought a bunch of fully automatic trucks, they're nice when sitting in traffic, but really aren't good for much else.

Fortunately, the lesson was learned, and next year's equipment purchases will bring manual transmissions back to our fleet.

Nice.

Sadly I feel that manuals will be gone in 10 years or less. I always hate how on mid-sized sedans you cant get a manual with the big motor! Why no V6 accord manual? Poor form imo.

The majority of my cars have been manual. The only time I'd want an automatic is if I had to sit in gridlock traffic regularly.

It's more fun to drive a manual, but I drive about 35,000 miles a year and I think I'd set my car on fire after about a month if I was forced to shift gears manually.
