If you look in the Jacobs thread I think you can find a quote about how someone feels very good about our chances with both Jacobs and Autry, and that they could pull the trigger sometime this weekend.

I like our chances with anyone that takes an official here. CDD doesn't waste visits on sightseers.

Bama had four guys on the First team Coaches All-SEC team for '07, Saban's second year, and two more on the second team. All of them were there when Saban arrived except for Andre Smith.

Strikes me as unlikely that we've got the talent to put six on the post-season Coaches two-deep this year. The guy who is arguably most likely to make the cut is Malik Jackson and he wasn't here when Dooley arrived, either.

So, since Saban inherited five All-SEC caliber guys and that Dooley very, very likely didn't, that it is reasonable to surmise that Saban had more talent on hand when he arrived than Dooley. I suppose someone could disagree, but I don't see how, if they're being honest.

Saban is just a great coach. Tell me why Robert Lester was in position for more plays than Janzen Jackson? He's not a better player in any respects. Saban made players like Travis Daniels and Corey Webster into lockdown CBs in college. Saban is a monster at smoke screens on defense. Rashad Johnson wasn't better than Janzen Jackson or Brewer. Can you list those 5 players? Caldwell and Andre Smith are the only two really good players.

Exactly. Shula inherited the dumpster fire not Saban. You can compare the. Dooley and Shula circumstances but Saban had some depth and talent. He did lose a few players but nothing like we did with Kiffin and Dooley being hired. But I think Dooley will be much more successful than Shula. But if not the next coach will have some talent and depth.

There's no point in us arguing about it if we can't agree on the simple point that a post-season Coaches All-SEC guy is a 'really good player'. I consider it absurd to argue otherwise.

I don't disagree that Saban's a great coach, but the discussion was about which coach walked into a better situation, talent-wise. Nothing about my point regarding inherited talent makes him any less of a coach. But him being a great coach also doesn't make those All-SEC guys mediocre talents to start with.

I don't think Saban or anyone else would put five guys that Dooley inherited on this years' post-season All-SEC team. I'm not even sure that five of them will even start at UT.

Mea Culpa here, 07 was actually Saban's FIRST year at Bama. So, he had six All-SEC guys his first year, all of whom were 'inherited'. Also had around six his second year, about four of which were inherited, I think (Cody/Hightower were exceptions). For what it's worth, Javier Arenas was also one that Saban inherited and I think everyone would agree he was really good.

I just don't think there were 5-6 upperclassmen on both last year's and this year's UT roster than can play at that level, no matter who the coach is. I also suspect that Bama likely had many more upperclassmen who were capable of starting during year two than we currently do.

Edit: Bama had about 18-19 Jr/Sr starters in '08. We'll have anywhere from 5-7.

I found it strange that none of the TN recruiting sites has had an interview with Autry... Jacobs is talking, why hasn't he done an update with someone?

I'm dying to know as well. Hopefully he liked it as well as Jacobs did. I'm really hoping to get these cats!

In the latest Scout Video he mentions Tennessee, Auburn, Alabama, and Miss St. as his top schools, but later mentioned that he had narrowed down his top 2 to Alabama and Miss. St.
